She was born on the 12th of February 1938, in Port Arthur, Texas, to her parents Alvyn and Helen Gabourel. Roxie graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1956, along with the love of her life, Sonny Lawson.
Before becoming a mother, Roxie worked as a Secretary at Texaco Research in Port Arthur for 9 years after completing her certification degree in stenography. During her motherhood years, she changed career paths to integrate her passion for fashion and clothes. She worked many years in the fashion industry as a buyer for Dryden’s and later successfully sold clothes for Doncaster and Carlisle from her home.
Roxie and Sonny starting dating in junior high. They married shortly following their high school graduation in June, 1957. They remained happily married and passionately in love for 59 years.
Roxie and Sonny had their daughter Paige in June, 1965. Together they were devoted to giving her an incredible life and loved nothing more than spending time together. Their love for Paige was immeasurable and she was their proudest and most prominent accomplishment. They loved to ride dirt bikes, travel and take weekend getaways to their second home in Crystal Beach. They continued that same loving family devotion to Paige’s daughter Elizabeth and spent the majority of their lifetime loving, supporting and caring for “their girls”. They were always there to support everything in their daughter’s and granddaughter’s lives. They were the most incredible, passionate, and dedicated parents and grandparents.
Roxie, also known as “Foxy Roxie” to those who had the pleasure of knowing her, was considered a true class act. She was the epitome of a beautiful, kind and generous Southern lady well before her time. Her class, style, and grace were in a league of her own. She was a straight-shooter with a quick wit and kind heart. Her love of fashion and beauty was apparent as she was always decked to the nines, looking like a million bucks everywhere she went. She was extremely intelligent and a voracious reader which made her knowledgeable about many things. Roxie was fascinated by history, politics, and sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Astros.
She and Sonny moved to Beaumont in 1996 and they joined Trinity United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the HAMACO Sunday school class and participated in the Walk to Emmaus. Roxie stayed very active in that community, which further deepened her love for Christ. Her faith in God was apparent to all and she never judged anyone, always encouraging everyone to love one another.
Roxie later moved from Beaumont to Houston to be closer to Paige, Matt and Elizabeth and enjoyed her past 4 years living at the Tradition.
Roxie is preceded in death by her beloved husband Sonny Lawson, her parents Alvyn and Helen Gabourel and her brother Larry Gabourel.
Roxie is survived by her daughter, Paige McCarroll and her husband Matt, and her granddaughter Elizabeth Eddingston and her fiancé Alejandro Flores.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the incredible staff at VITAS Healthcare, as well as her caretakers, Sheila House, Nelvie Senduk, Stella Baggett and Kala Bachelor, who together provided her with exceptional loving care.
A funeral service is to be conducted at one o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 4th of December, in the Chapel of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston, where the Rev. Ryan Trushenski is to officiate.
