Ron was born November 16, 1938, to Harold and Gladys Nickle of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. In 1962 he married the love of his life, Maureen Nelson, and the two were inseparable for 62 years.
A graduate of the University of Calgary, Ron began an extensive career in the oil and gas industry in his home province of Alberta, first as a derrick hand and eventually creating a partnership as a geophysical consultant. In 1975, Ron moved his young family from Calgary to Houston where he continued to broaden the depth of his knowledge and experience in the field, working until only months before his death.
Ron was an active member of the O&G community and a member of the SEG. He was also a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church where he served many years as a Vincentian and assisted his wife with RCIA.
An enthusiastic sports fan, Ron never missed an Astros, Texans, or Longhorns game. When his granddaughter attended Texas A&M, he often traded his burnt orange for Aggie Maroon, but only temporarily. He was an avid stamp and coin collector. As a boy, he spent childhood summers at his uncle’s farm where he grew to love gardening and caring for animals; both of which became a legacy that he passed on to his two daughters. Ron had a wicked sense of humor and an infectious laugh. He was most proud of his three granddaughters, who will miss his love and support.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Neil Nickle. He leaves behind his loving wife, Maureen Nickle of Houston, Texas; daughters, Kelli Sullivan and husband Peter of Houston, Texas, Kristi Silberman and husband Jon of Arrington, TN; granddaughters, Madeline Silberman of Nashville, TN, Kathleen Sullivan of Houston, TX, Reese Silberman of Richmond, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
The Nickle family would like to give special thanks to their dear friends at the Eagles Trace Senior Community who brought Ron so much joy with their camaraderie. We cannot begin to express our gratitude for the selfless and compassionate Eagles Trace caregivers who looked after Ron for the past year and a half.
There will be a funeral service at 10:30 am on Tuesday January 7, 2025, in the sanctuary at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc Dr. Houston, TX 77024.
A reception will follow the service in the St. Cecilia Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Ron’s name to the Dominican Sisters, 6501 Almeda Rd., Houston, TX 77021.
