Colonel Rohini Mohini Daniels, M.D., 80, passed away peacefully in her daughter's home in Houston, TX on January 3, 2023. She was surrounded by her loving family as she ended her long battle with dementia. Rohini was born in Allahabad, India to Basil and Doris David on April 5, 1942. She was the middle child of 2 surviving brothers, Denzil and Alwyn David. She spent her youth in Allahabad attending St. Mary’s Convent, Jagat Taran High School and Ewing Christian College. She then attended Ludhiana Medical School where she met her first husband, Dilavaz Bazliel, who unfortunately passed 2 years later. She practiced as an OB/GYN physician in Allahabad and subsequently married her husband of 44 years, Eric Daniels, who was also a widower.
In 1971, Eric and Rohini immigrated to the United States to Chicago, Illinois. Rohini changed medical specialties, becoming a resident in pathology at Cook County Medical Center. She then joined the U.S. Army and ascended to the rank of Colonel which she held for 16 years. During her 27 year military career, she served at Darnall Army Hospital in Fort Hood, TX, Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, and in Fort Polk in Louisiana. Her distinguished military service included Chief of Pathology, department and hospital chairs, residency directorships, and numerous distinguished service medals. She was a member of several medical, pathology, cytology, and military associations. After leaving the military she helped establish and run a Quest diagnostics franchise until her retirement at age 68.
Despite her many professional achievements, she often stated her number one medal was her beloved children and grandchildren. She adored her family and would sacrifice anything to help them. She was an avid gardener, talented seamstress, and loved games, music and dance. She was well known as a devoted mother, caring daughter, supportive sister, loving wife, passionate teacher, respected colleague, loyal soldier and genuine friend. The Daniels family would like to give the upmost gratitude, love, and appreciation to the many caregivers who helped care for Rohini.
Rohini was preceded in death by her husband Eric Daniels in 2015. She is survived by her daughters Ambreen (Smita) Salters, Ravita Sinha, and youngest son, Rajesh Daniels, as well as her grandchildren Sydney Salters, Alina Sinha, Raj Sinha II, Jackson Salters and Skylar Daniels.
Family visitation will be at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home in Houston, Texas on January 14, 2023 at 1pm followed by a funeral service at 2pm. Full Military Honors burial service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on January 16, 2023 at 9:30am.
