Robert Wayne Scott (Bob), 93, of Houston, passed away on September 22, 2021 surrounded by family. He was born September 19, 1928 in Houston to the late Steve and Ida Scott, their only child. He was an Edna High School graduate, attended Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, and received a BS in petroleum engineering from The University of Texas (Austin). Bob served in the Army, 10th Infantry Division, Company C, 85th Infantry, 4th Platoon.
He married the love of his life, Rosemarie Born, in 1951 and she predeceased him in 2018. Bob was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his son Robert, Jr. (Leedell), daughter Marilee (Larry Davis), grandchildren Dianne Friedl (Andrew), Melissa McElwee (Steve), Robert L. Scott (Rachel), great-grandchildren Drew and Henry Friedl, Conor and Gavin McElwee, and Robert James and Olivia Rose Scott. He was a 60-year member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church and after retirement edited the Sunday sermons. He was smart, kind, funny, and a consummate storyteller. He loved a party, his friends, his colleagues, and especially his family.
Bob’s oilfield work began in 1947, first with Magnolia Petroleum, then Gulf Oil. He joined Gulf Publishing Co. in 1958 as engineering editor for World Oil magazine, and retired as President, Chairman and CEO of Gulf Publishing in 1998. Bob led the first U.S. upstream oil and gas delegation to China in 1978, where he met and performed a sketch with Bob Hope. He regularly received speaking invitations from oilfield organizations around the world, and he and Rose visited 23 foreign countries and 19 foreign capitals for his “talks.” He was an authority on topics from oil production to oilfield operations in Saudi Arabia and China. He was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the National Ocean Industries Association, and NOMADS for many years. He was inducted as an Industry Pioneer in the Oilfield Energy Center Hall of Fame in 2016 for his long, illustrious service to the industry.
Visitation 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, October 3, Forest Park Westheimer, 12800 Westheimer. Funeral Service Monday, October 4, 10:00 a.m., St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 1353 Witte Rd. Interment will follow at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery. Memorial contributions welcomed by St. Andrew Lutheran Church or your favorite charity.
