Robert Louis Schneider, ever dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, was born to Henry and Emma Cambre Schneider, on July 11, 1925, in Metairie, Louisiana. He went to be with the Lord on March 2, 2022, at the age of 96, in Houston.
Throughout his life, he was called by the name, “Bob.” In 1931, his family moved to Houston, having earlier lived in New York City for three years. He graduated from San Jacinto High School in Houston, where he was a gymnast and on the basketball team.
After high school, Bob enlisted in the US Navy, and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Upon enlistment, he deployed to Groton, Connecticut for basic training. Then, in Pearl Harbor, he was assigned to the USS Howard Gilmore, a submarine tender. Bob then served aboard the submarines USS Cavallo, USS Lizardfish, and USS Brill. He had been stationed in Hawaii, Australia, the Philippines, Marshall Islands, and California.
Following his service in the Navy, Bob returned to Houston, and attended the University of Houston, studying engineering. He also became an accomplished ballroom dancer, and a dance instructor at the Arthur Murray Dance Studios, in 1946. It was there that he met another dance instructor, Gloria Jean Craft. A romance ensued, and Bob and Gloria were married on June 4, 1949. They were a devoted couple until Gloria departed this life in 2007.
Bob had a career in the processing plant engineering and design industry. His specialty was in piping design, which he applied at Fluor, Lummus, and other firms. Over many years, he was engaged in the piping design of numerous chemical processing and other manufacturing facilities. Many in the engineering and design firms where Bob worked learned from him.
Bob had numerous other interests as well. He was a fisherman and a hunter. He also much enjoyed golf, archery, and the game of pinochle.
In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, Gloria, Bob was predeceased by his sister, Lois Giuffré, and his brothers, Henry “Hank” Jr., and Rodney.
He is survived by his children, Mark, Pamela, and Karen George (and husband John), and by his grandchildren Christopher (and wife Kelly), son of Mark, and J.J., son of Karen and John, and by his numerous nieces and nephews.
Robert Louis Schneider was a man of deep faith, with a great devotion to the Holy Bible. He ministered to many groups at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, and he mentored and nurtured his family in Christianity. He was a man of good humor, and of unbounded love and devotion to his family and friends.
He will be laid to rest, joining his wife, Gloria, after an outdoor service with military honors, at the Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, in Houston, on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at 10:00 am.
