Robert James Mhoon, age 91, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away on September 15, 2014. Robert was born to Arthur B. And Ollie Mae Mhoon on July 17, 1923. He was raised in Houston, TX and graduated from San Jacinto High School.
Robert completed one year at Texas A & M before he enlisted in the armed forces. As a Tech Sgt. he served with the 15th Air Force in Italy during World War II and flew on B-17's as a radio operator. On his 20th mission, over the oil fields of Ploesti, Romania, his plane was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire. After riding the plane down, he and several other crew members were captured and became prisoners of war. Robert spent his 21st birthday in 1944 in a Romanian prison camp. At the close of the war, he remained in the Air Force Reserve where he held the rank of
1st Lieutenant. He was honored to hold a Purple Heart, the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, the European Theatre of Operations Ribbon with three Battle Stars and a Good Conduct Medal.
On August 19, 1945, Robert married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Joy James. They were married for 67 years until her passing in 2012. Together they raised three sons. Robert and Peggy were devoted companions. They were wonderful dancers and enjoyed the company of family and friends. In later years they became avid bowlers and were active in their church.
Robert was an active member and former Chaplain of the Houston Chapter of The Military Order of the World Wars.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Peggy, and his oldest son, Mike. He is survived by his son, John, and wife, Carol, and his son, Bill, and wife, Jeannie. He leaves three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Services will be on Friday, September 19, 2014, in the Family Chapel at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home in Houston, TX. There will be a visitation for family and friends beginning at noon with services at 2:00 pm
