My dear father, you left us suddenly on July 23, 2022, and we know it was not by your choice. It has been extremely difficult for us to acknowledge your departure, as it was just yesterday, we were each having our own individual conversations with you, enjoying your expressions of concern, your laughter, social commentary, and disappointment with Houston Texans. You accepted each one of us children and loved us despite our differences and flaws, and you built long-lasting meaningful relationships with your past co-workers, Texas Southern University peers, and neighbors. You made us all feel like whole and complete human beings who mattered in your life.
For these and many other things unspoken, we all want to say, “Thank you!”. Thank you for the holiday meals and get togethers as you passed on grandma Nenny’s traditions. Thank you for the carefully wrapped Christmas gifts and well wishes that always arrived early. Thank you for your continuous support throughout the years of our lives when we needed a few dollars to make it through, maybe a vehicle or a bed to lay our heads. Thank you for your passionate works of art that keep expressing your depth and appreciation of our African origins and the mental, social, and political constraints under which we often find ourselves in subjection. Most importantly, thank you for the many lessons you taught us about generosity, not just monetarily, but generosity with time, lessons of exercising our talents and not letting them fade, lessons of love.
You have departed physically from us, but the lessons you gave and your love we will carry on with us forever.
