I can only agree with what has been graciously said so far.  I  miss Bobby terribly!

Robert Fowler was a kind and giving person who could never understood how much people loved him and what a powerful impact he had on our lives.  He and I were friends—effectively siblings, including in the ways we fought with one another—for more than 40 years.  I frequently called him “Bobby” and he frequently, especially when he was feeling affectionate, called me “VB” (my nickname is “V”).

He could be absolutely maddening, particularly because he was so consistently LATE for things (he became better about this when he stopped driving and started taking Ubers to get places), but he carried immense warmth and compassion within himself, and that made up for a great deal.  He would perform small acts of kindness, both for people he knew and for complete strangers, then brush aside thanks as if he had done nothing at all.

When he was younger, Robert loved to host parties.  Gathering people and feeding them well gave him great joy.  Many of us will remember his "Northern Exposure" gatherings, filled with people and many containers of Chinese food.  We had some incredible feasts at his house for Thanksgiving and Christmas, including the Great Christmas Feast of 1994 that featured many courses and an enormous amount of wine.  He hugely enjoyed having his house filled with laughing people, yet he never gave himself credit for being the catalyst for all that rejoicing.

I wish that Robert had known in this life that he was profoundly and deeply loved.  Now that he is in God’s all-embracing arms, I hope that he knows and believes that.


I am missing Bobby so much at this time. We spoke the week before and he told me he was tired of living as he was and arranging for home hospice but I did not think he would be gone so quickly. Twice today I started to call him and sadly realized I would not hear his robust.... HELLO AL!!! which I would often mimic.
He lived with me and my partner on and off while he went to SLawrence and while he was still able to travel he would come and visit and we would always have so much fun.
Both Tony and I offer our deepest sympathy to Andrew , his family and the many friends he had. 
We will see you on "the other side" Bobby. You never realized in life how much you were cherished. . . I hope you do now.
