Robert Lee Bostick

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Hazel Jane Melton Bostick; parents, Charlie and Willie Mae Bostick; sisters, Mattie Vann, Lola Ownby, Ila Bradbury, Martha Cammack and Bernice Lightner; brothers, James Bostick, William Bostick and Leon Bostick.

Robert is survived by daughter and husband, Karen and Mike Duncan of Katy, Texas; grandson, Jarrod Black and wife Kari of Houston, Texas; sister, Nellie Bell; brother, Harold Bostick and wife Laverne; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members.

Robert met the love of his life, Hazel, through family and friends, and after a three-year courtship, they married in 1952 in Little Rock, Arkansas. They made their home there until he was drafted in 1954. Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1954 – 1956. Military service took Robert to San Juan Puerto Rico where he was stationed at Fort Buchanan. Hazel joined him for much of the time he was stationed there. Upon his discharge they returned to Little Rock and their daughter was born later that year.

They moved to Houston in 1958 and made their home in this area where they lived the remainder of their lives. Robert accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 37. He was an ordained deacon and faithfully served for many years. Even in his later years, Robert continued to live a life of service to others. He had the gift of connecting with people, always finding a common denominator for establishing a relationship and therefore never met a stranger.

Robert was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He lived a life of integrity, never had an unkind word for anyone, and he was the quintessential family man that led by example and took pleasure in nurturing those he loved.

Robert retired from the United States Post Office in 1986. In his retirement years, he continued to do the things he enjoyed but just more of them. He loved to garden, and the yard was always full of plants and flowers. There was always a backyard vegetable garden and out of the abundance, he would give away more than he kept.

His guitar was always close at hand and he would often entertain visitors and looked forward to the annual family reunion and playing with others on Saturday night.

Robert was interested in genealogy and had traced his family back to Scotland in the 1600s. He tracked down many individuals during his research and established relationships that endure today. He loved his family and routinely kept in touch with extended family members coast-to-coast.

He was a voracious reader throughout his life. He enjoyed history, politics, and economics and loved to discuss ideas and was always ready for a good debate. His favorite book was the Bible which you would see him reading and meditating on each day. “Hear me as I pray, O Lord. Be merciful and answer me! My heart has heard you say, Come and talk with me. And my heart responds, Lord, I am coming.” Psalm 27:7-8 NLT

Visitation for family and friends will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, April 26th 5PM–8PM. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 27th at 11AM at Kingsland Baptist Church, Katy, Texas, the Reverend Alex Kennedy officiating. Graveside service and burial will be on April 28th at 11AM at Lynches Chapel Cemetery in Alto, Texas.
