Rick was born on the 25th of November 1955, in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was the second child and eldest son of Shirley Stephenson Flowers and Richard Leo Flowers, Sr.
Rick's family moved to Houston when he was less than a year old. He attended St. Cecilia Catholic School and graduated from St. Thomas Catholic High School in 1974. Rick graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1979 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. During college, he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
In the summer and fall of 1976, Rick demonstrated his lifelong interest in public policy by working in the Houston mayor's office. He later served as a legislative aide to State Senator Chase Untermeyer. Because of these two factors, Mayor Fred Hofheinz proclaimed Rick the City of Houston's 1976 "Bureaucratic Rookie of the Year" and declared the 3rd of December 1976, "Rick Flowers Day."
Rick graduated from South Texas College of Law with dean's list honors in 1982. Rick was a member of the Law Review and the Order of the Lytae.
Rick's legal career began as a briefing attorney for Chief Justice Frank G. Evans of Houston's First Court of Appeals. Rick treasured this experience, frequently reflecting on how it afforded him a unique insight into the legal system.
Rick then entered private practice, initially with the well-renowned Butler Binion. Rick's career continued at Mueller, Oaks & Hartline, Alexander & McEvily, and McEvily & Flowers. In 2010, Rick established his own firm, which was eventually titled Flowers Law Firm. He was in the process of retiring at the time of his passing.
Rick was an excellent lawyer and a member of many professional associations, including the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates, Houston Bar Association, American Bar Association, and Texas Family Law Council. Numerous publications, including Martindale-Hubbell, Texas Monthly Super Lawyers, and H Texas Magazine, recognized Rick's expertise. As his opposing counsel will attest, Rick was a zealous advocate and expert trial lawyer.
Rick prided himself as a family law leader in Houston and across Texas. He routinely handled all types of family law matters, focusing on complex divorces—many of which were high-profile. Occasionally, Rick’s matters drew attention from the press. Rick valued his relationships with other attorneys who entrusted Rick with client referrals.
He enjoyed sharing his legal expertise with anyone interested in legal matters. He inspired and encouraged two of his nephews to enter the practice of law.
Rick's passion was the law, but he developed new hobbies as he entered retirement, particularly reigniting his passion for training and breeding horses. Rick's interest in horses originated when he was a child. His first horse was an Appaloosa named Goober. Several horses followed, each winning many trophies and ribbons. Rick purchased an American Quarter Horse registered as Lil Joes Goldigger in June of 2022. At the time of his passing, Rick eagerly anticipated the birth of Goldigger's colt to be borne by a surrogate. This event would have launched a new chapter in Rick's life: one of breeding horses at his happy place - Callegari Equestrian Club.
Rick is predeceased by his father. In addition to his mother, Rick is survived by his sisters, Ann Doggett (Leslie) and Colette Leonard (Michael); brothers, Bob and Jim (Lissa); nieces, Amy Schramm (Payton), Caroline Kostrzewa (Ryan) and Katherine Flowers; nephews, David Leonard (Kelly), William Doggett (Rebecca), Stephen Flowers (Ashley), and Marshall Flowers; six great-nephews; and three great-nieces. Rick is also survived by his beloved dogs Archie and De Sota.
Rick’s family acknowledges Dee Herman for her extraordinary, unwavering 31 years of loyalty to Rick and commitment to the success of Rick’s legal career. Dee was his paralegal, office administrator, and, most importantly, his steadfast, trusted friend.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon to seven o’clock in the evening on Friday, the 8th of September, in the grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A Mass of Christian Burial is to be offered at eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 9th of September at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 1801 Sage in Houston, where the Rev. Wayne W. Wilkerson, Pastor, will celebrate.
The family will gather for a private inurnment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston at a later date.
