Richard Henry Perez, fondly known as Uncle Tutu, of Houston, Texas passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at the age of 74. Richard was born on July 30, 1948 in Houston, Texas to Virginia May and Henry Perez.
Richard worked 33 years at the Kroger’s distribution center in Houston, Texas where he made many acquaintances that would become lifelong friends. He was the patriarch of the family, serving as a protector, mentor, and counsel to all those in need. A bear of a man whose intimidating appearance belied a kind heart and gentle soul, Richard never knew a stranger, making friends everywhere he went. Richard was an avid fisherman who would regale you with stories of his angling adventures. A talented dancer, in his younger years he could often be found cutting a rug to the sounds of oldies music on the dance floor of The Hop. Richard was a fervent gambler who loved the slot machines whether they were in Vegas, Lake Charles, or the local game room. A long suffering Astros fan, Richard loved watching the boys take the field and saw a wish fulfilled by their 2017 World Series victory.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents Virginia May and Henry Perez, parents-in-law Jimmie and Sherry Janczak, and brother-in-law Richard Cantu. Richard is survived by his wife of 22 years Susan, his children Dawn (Rudy) Gaona, Angela Perez, step-son Rodney (Roxanne) Janczak, brother Mark Perez, sisters, Theresa Cantu, Paula (Jim Lithgow) Motal, Donna (Jeremy) Scott, and Patty (Robert) Stehlik, 2 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews, and too many friends to count.
A memorial service for Richard will be held Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Pat H. Foley & Company, 1200 West 34th Street, Houston, TX 77018.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like you consider making a donation to the Texas Kidney Foundation in memory of Richard. The family would like to thank the staff of Davita TC Jester who showed Richard compassion and provided a high quality of care over the last 4 and a half years.
