Richard was born to the late Dexter Cleveland and Edith Bentley Kinney in Ridley Park, PA on February 8, 1930. While he was still very young, his family moved to Austin Texas where he was immersed in the Christian community that would be his lifelong support from an early age.
Richard “Dick” graduated from the University of Texas and was immediately hired by General Electric in Houston. When suggested that he relocate to New York, he decided to enlist and went on to serve in the Army for 2 years. Upon his return to Texas, Dick was asked to be a part of Humble Oil and Refining’s Computing Center in Houston. He retired from Exxon after more than 30 years of service.
Dick met his wife, Margaret Peters at Riverside Methodist Church where they were married on August 9, 1958. Margaret and Dick were founding members of Southwest United Methodist Church and raised their three children with patience and kindness. Margaret and Dick dedicated their children to God and encouraged them to explore the beauty of the gospels. In 1975, Margaret and Dick joined Houston’s First Baptist Church where Dick has served as a Deacon. They often took the family on long road trips to see the many parts of America. Margaret and Dick continued their travels during retirement with fantastic cruises on the QE2 and Queen Mary, as well as trips to Jerusalem, Europe and Hawaii.
Dick was considerate and compassionate to others and never missed the opportunity to show his kindness in whatever way he could. He faithfully cared for his wife in their later years, loving and serving her well. He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at peace with his Creator.
Richard was blessed with a large and loving family. He is survived by his daughter Beth Robertson and husband Tom; daughter Mary Dawson and husband Mike; 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Katherine Kinney Smith, and sister Joyce Johnson.
The family extends grateful thanks to our loving caregiver Ebony Watley, as well as the staff of Highland Hospice for their care of Richard.
Richard will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. A visitation with family and friends will be held on Thursday, April 21st from 5 until 8pm at Memorial Oaks funeral home – 13001 Katy Freeway.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests your prayers, condolences, memories and any donation to the charity of your choosing.
