Richard I. Gibson Junior, 76, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018 after a long illness. He was born in Lufkin, Texas on October 8, 1941 to Myrtle Jewel “Bill” Gibson and Richard I. “Dick” Gibson Senior.
The family moved to Houston when he was 2 years old. He attended Hartman Jr. High and Jesses H. Jones High School. He was elected Mr. Jesse H. Jones and most popular senior. He graduated in 1960. He attended, Texas Christian University and the University of Houston.
He worked his whole life at East End Transfer & Storage, Inc. starting at the age of 5, sweeping the warehouse and working his way through driver dispatch, and succeeding his father as President upon his retirement. He loved the sales aspect of the business. He retired at 50 and passed the mantle to his daughter, April Gibson Surratt. He grew up fishing with his father and had a boat before he could drive. He spent many hours, water skiing in Galveston with his sister, brother-in-law, and friends. He enjoyed hunting and playing golf. He met his wife of 55 years when he was 6, and started dating when they were 14.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Dick Gibson; sister and brother-in-law Betty and Bill Cameron. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sue Ellen Dewees Gibson; daughter and son-in-law, April and Gaylon Surratt; granddaughters Kailee Surratt and Holly Painchault, husband David Pizarro Painchault; niece Colleen Cameron; nephew Phillip Cameron, wife, Missy.
Services will be held at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas 77023 on June 9, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, his family asks for donations to the Salvation Army or Charity of their choice.
