PETE MATA entered into eternal rest to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 1, 2020 in Houston, Texas at the age of 80. Pete was born in Houston to the union of the late Pedro and Manuela (Sifuentes) Mata, as the 5th of 7 siblings. He graduated from Milby High School and served in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Germany. Pete was part-owner of the Hurricane Night Club and loved playing music. He married Angela (Rodriguez) Mata in 1969 and was married to her for 37 years before she passed away in 2006. Together, Pete and Angela raised 5 sons and 1 granddaughter. Pete worked for American Can Company for 16 years and retired from Anheuser Busch in 2002 after 20 years of service. Pete found love again and married Debbie Phillips on February 21, 2015 who has been his faithful and loving companion for over 12 years.
Pete is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Angela, his brother Jesse Mata and his sister Eva Reyes. Left behind to cherish Pete’s memory and celebrate his life are his wife Debbie Mata; children Frank Garza, Jr. (Sheila), Gilbert Garza, Elby Garza (Melissa), Jaime Mata (Trina), Gregory Mata (Karen), and granddaughter Jennifer Cantu (Daniel); Robert Phillips (Valerie), Danielle Huerta (Angel), Frank Phillips and Giovanni Phillips. Pete’s long and proud legacy also includes 15 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, including Phillip Garza, Jimi Ray Garza, Tim Walczak, Kira Edgar, Ashlee Garza, Alena Larrea, Matthew Mata, Micah Mata, Jadah Mata, Victoria Mata, Angela Mata, Isaac Phillips, Robert Phillips, Ezekiel Phillips, Krysiana Huerta and great-grandson Nicholas Cox. Pete is also survived by 4 siblings, sisters Martha Thompson & Lupe Chavez and brothers Roy Mata & Rudy Mata. He also impacted the lives of countless cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Pete loved to travel. He took his wife, kids, nephews, nieces, in-laws, uncles, aunts and friends all over the United States to landmarks, parks and campgrounds across the country. He loved the Lord first and fiercely loved his family. He loved watching Houston sports teams play – Astros, Texans and Rockets. He loved to play golf, loved a good meal, loved (really loved) karaoke, loved good conversation and loved people unconditionally. In short, Pete loved. He never met a stranger, always had a smile and was always up for some good food, good music, a good time and a good belly laugh.

Greg, my condolences on your Dad's passing. I worked with him and you for a long time and both of you always had a big smile on your face and a nice hardy laugh to go round. I can still see it in my mind the first time I met you. I was pulling into Texaco GC and you and Pete were just about to cross the road. I think you must have been about 10 or so. I stopped to say hi, and you had a big grin on your face. I looked at Pete and he was just grinning and gave a little wink. He was always so proud of you. For years after that, I would always ask him, how's the kid's golf game, and he was always tickled to tell me about you. Good guy, he's smiling in heaven now.
Pete was truly a kind and generous person who really loved life. When my older brother (Richard Gonzales) whom he worked with at Budweiser Brewery, suffered a stroke ,it was Pete that would come by often to see him and actually took us on a tour of the brewery with Richard. You will be missed Pete but our Lord has many rewards for you in heaven. May God bless and comfort the family of Pete Mata.
Pete was a very special person. Each time you saw him he treated you like you were special. He always had a kind and gentle manner about him. He will certainly be missed but he is being treated more special now that he is at rest with the lord. He left a great great legacy behind him. Now he can surely rest in peace.
My deepest condolences to the Mata family on the loss of their loved one, my cousin Pete Mata. As everyone has mentioned he had the most beautiful smile and shared it very much. He comes from a loving family, which makes me proud to be part of. I remember him being so sweet when my daddy Manuel (Cat) Munoz and mom Sara would load up the car and take us after Sunday Mass to visit family. He’d sit outdoors and enjoy the family visit. RIP & God Bless you cousin, Pete. Thank you for your services. 🇺🇸 Representing The Munoz Family

I've known Pete ever since my daughter, Karen, met Greg. Pete was a wonderful person. He had a great love for his family and friends. He was so good to everyone, always had a smile. His sons, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews were very much loved by him. He loved to sing and his sons enjoyed singing with him. He was always helping others. He was there for Greg when he opened up his restaurant. Pete was a very caring person. My prayers are with the family. Pete will be missed.
Such a kind soul. Condolences to the family. You will be missed!! The Reyes
I never met you but I know your son, Jaime, and his family. You must have been a great guy because you raised a great son who carries your values on. Watch over all of us from up there.
We are so thankful to have been blessed to know this family for many years! Pete was always so kind to us and treated us like family, greeting each of us with a hug and a smile! A few years back we celebrated birthdays in Rockwell, dancing the night away and Pete was right there enjoying the evening! He was an amazing dad and man of God! We love you all so very much! He is certainly celebrating in Heaven today! We love you all, The Pelfrey’s
I remember so clearly where I got my intense love for Karaoke. It was from the time I was very young, when my popo brought out his giant machine and wanted me to sing on it. I remember us trying to get me to learn I'm like a bird by Nelly Furtado. Soon after that I wanted my own karaoke machine, when I got old enough (Well, I wasnt really old enough at all) I was introduced to my first stage with my dad Gilbert Garza and Popo were there too. It was the Canary Club and no one probably knew what I was singing but I was so happy just to have my family there for me to watch. I always sang for friends and family here and there but I will never forget the way karaoke made me feel more confident and secure in front of others. I give the warmest thanks to my grandfather for that, for being unafraid to do what he loved and teaching me to just go for it!
Our prayers are with Pete and the entire family. The Rodriguez sisters, parents moved here from Corpus in 1952. The Mata family were our first neighbors. They were more than friends, they were family. We loved all of them very much.
I worked with Pete for years. He was always happy and uplifting, just a great guy. He is now in Heaven and enjoying his new life, visiting with friends and family, awaiting and preparing for his next adventure.
Pete was one of the nicest men I have been blessed to know. I remember hearing him sing at one of our new years parties. The memories I have of going over to visit and always being accepted when we were younger are priceless. It comforts me to know as the Angel's escorted him home he is in the presents of our King. What a great celebration it is for him, we all will see you soon. "To Live is Christ, To Die is Gain."
I just wanted to leave my condolences to the Mata family (my cousins). Pete was the nicest and sweetest person I ever known. He and Angie always accepted my dad and my mom and my siblings into their house when we were younger. They had a lot of get togethers and I miss that especially now. I pray that God surround you all and comfort you all during this time. Love y’all! -❤️cousin Patricia!
Pete will be missed but his memories will live on. May God place his hands on the hearts of each family member to provide strength during this time. Our condolences, Debi Pierce Michael Harting
I worked with Debbie at Chase Bank and saw how happy she was when her and Pete were together. He was the love of her life and I know it was mutual. My husband, Erik, knew Pete from the Oldtimers coming to our restaurant, Lenox Barbeque back in the day. Both Debbie and Pete will be in our hearts forever. Rest In Peace, Pete. ❤️
