Penny was born, along with her twin Patsy, in Redondo Beach, California, on July 19th, 1942. After her mother moved her twin girls to Houston, Penny remained a steadfast Houstonian for the rest of her life. She and Patsy attended and graduated from Lamar High School. Penny continued her education at the University of Texas at El Paso where she joined the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She then graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Elementary Education. Returning to Houston, Penny taught at both Walnut Bend and Briargrove Elementary Schools. She was a dedicated and lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church.
Penny was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Elizabeth McNamara; her husband, Donald E. Stewart; her second husband, Stephen G. Loy, Jr; and her special granddaughter, Patricia Kathryn Davis.
Survivors include her daughters, Cindy St. Lawrence (Roland), Selise Stewart (John Wile), Seretha Fisher (Mark), and Lauren Shinall (Brian); stepdaughter, Chris Robinson (Steven); stepson, Stephen G. Loy, III; grandchildren, Brandon St. Lawrence, Corey St. Lawrence, Justin St. Lawrence, Jack Fisher, Luke Fisher, Julia Fisher, Brinkley Shinall, Brynn Shinall, Katey Robinson, and Austin Robinson; many great-grandchildren; her sister and brother in law, Patsy and Tom Daly; and her nephews, Kevin Daly, Brendan Daly and Andrew Daly.
The family would like to thank Penny’s wonderful caregivers, Michelle Johnson, Kathy Skinner, Carla Willis, Rhonda Henderson, Kim Stephens and her Hospice nurse Kristie Stokes. A very special thanks goes out to Josefina Corbera for 27 years of friendship and service.
Penny was a loving mother, friend, and neighbor. She will be remembered by countless people as a “dearly treasured friend,” “a bright light and the epitome of joyfulness,” and “she gave her whole self in giving joy to others.”
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Penny can make donations to First Presbyterian Church, Houston Hospice, or the organization of your choice.
Her life will be celebrated Thursday, June 15th, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street, Houston. Penny requested colorful attire at her gathering.
The service for Penny will be livestreamed for those unable to attend.
