Paul graduated Franklin & Marshall College with a B.A. in Geology, and University of Texas at Austin with an M.A. and Ph.D. in Geology. He worked as a geologist in the oil and gas industry for 47 years, at Marathon Oil Company, British Petroleum, Maritech Resources, and Bahamas Petroleum Company; from 2013 to the time of his death, he worked at Roxanna Oil Company as their Executive Vice President. He also founded Texas 3 Star Energy Investment and served as its president for almost two decades.
He was instrumental in helping organize and run StemForce Bahamas, a 4-year summer geology-focused STEM program for Bahamian students jointly coordinated by the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas in Austin and the Bahamas Ministry of Education from 2014 to 2018 to increase the number and diversity of high school graduates entering STEM fields and to help young minds reach their full academic and personal potential.
He was a beloved father, grandfather and brother who cared profoundly about the people around him, and he will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his three children, Jennifer Gucwa (San Jose, CA), Christina Gucwa (Manitou Springs, CO) and MIchael Gucwa (Palo Alto, CA); his granddaughter Leona Gucwa (Palo Alto, CA); and his siblings, Jack Guswa (Florence, MA), Marilyn Sobush (Clearwater, FL) and Beverly Ventrella (Clearwater, FL). He was predeceased by his wife, Cheryl Gucwa, in 2013.
The memorial service will take place in Houston on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, as a celebration of Paul's life on what would have been his 75th birthday, and will be held at Maggiano's Little Italy Memorial City (602 Memorial City Mall, 77024) from 5 to 7 pm. Donations to Search Homeless are welcomed in lieu of flowers.
