Ocie Lee Brown died peacefully in her home in Spring, Texas on Friday, December 18, 2020 at the sweet age of 70, the number of years promised to followers of the Lord, Jesus Christ. A Celebration of life will be held at The Triumphant Church on December 28, 2020 followed immediately by a traditional burial ceremony at Paradise North Cemetery. Officiating the service will be Pastor Tim Dixon of The Triumphant Church.
Ocie was born in Warren, Texas on March 17, 1950, one of five children, of Jabo and Y.C. Barkin. Ocie attended the Warren Independent School district system and graduated from Warren High School at the age of 18. She actively completed school while working and helping her family on their farm.
She married James L Brown on March 15 1973, two days before her twenty-third birthday. Ocie gave her life to Christ at a young age and raised her children
using biblical principles as her guide. Ocie and her family frequented Bella Vista Missionary Baptist Church. While raising children, Ocie, through pure dedication and resilience, worked her way from employee to co-owner of a dry-cleaning business.
Ocie’s favorite job, however, was being a dedicated and inspirational wife and mother She treasured her children and embraced every moment she spent with them. She especially cherished her role as Granny. Her warmth and kindness caused many people to consider her their second mom or grandma. She was vivacious and funny, always making people around her laugh. She made friends easily everywhere she went. She meant everything to those she left behind.
While not many people knew, and you would not know based on Ocie’s strength and spirit, her last few days, months and years were difficult. She suffered health ailments that would have broken many people. But, she was unbreakable, always pushing on with a smile and a fighting spirit rooted in her faith in God. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. There was no quit in Ocie. She will be sorely missed and her memory we will honor forever.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jabo and Y.C. Barkin; her husband, James L. Brown; her daughter, Twyla Brown, and her sisters Etoy Davison and Effie Barkin; her brother, Robert “Sunny” Barkin, as well as other beloved family members.
She is survived by her brother Arnold (Vanessa) Barkin; her brother-in-law, John Lee Brown; her children: Yolanda Brown, Michelle (Bernard) Jackson and Jamie Brown, her grandchildren: James Deon Brown, and Jahneekwah Hicks, and a host of nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.
