Houston, Texas, to the late Malcom and Lena Barnes, Sr. She was the fourth of five
siblings.
Affectionately called "MeMe," she was a giving woman to all who came in
contact with her. During her time as a Girl Scout Leader, she would gain valuable
knowledge that would allow her to help others throughout her life. She attended
Atherton Elementary, E.O. Smith Middle School, where she was in the girls' choir.
Nobia graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in 1960. During her time as a
Wildcat, she was a member ofthe Student Council, Glee Club, Cosmopolitan Club, and
elected Vice-President of her graduating class. While in high school, she met Leroy
Firmer, who later become her husband, the love of her life and best friend. From this
union, six wonderful children were born, Twauana, Terrance, Troy, Tanisha, Trarnon,
and Tramyra.
Momma was raised in the Church of God In Christ. She found Christ at an early
age. She attended the following churches, Mt. View COGIC, Cage Street/Anderson
Memorial COGIC, Prince of Peace COGIC, and Lily of The Valley COGIC under Bishop
Frank E. Fanniel, Sr.
She worked in food services for over 20 years at Hobby Elementary, where she
let no child go hungry, regardless if they had money or forgot their white hole-
punched lunch card. She already knew who was who. You knew you were special if
you got extra chocolate milk and those nickel cookies. While working at Hobby, she
also volunteered as the Madison Football team and neighborhood mom, ensuring
everyone had goody bags and food to eat. If you came to the Pinner's house, you knew
you would eat, no matter what. She was a strong woman, being a cancer survivor,
living and fighting through illness for as long as God allowed her to stay, until he
decided she had gone enough rounds and said you have fought the good fight.
