Nera was born to Benancio and Rachel Quiñones on August 9, 1937, in Lockhart, Texas. Nera graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1955 and went on to attend Texas Women’s University. Nera married Robert Banks on December 5, 1975, and they lived together in both Buffalo, Texas and Houston, Texas.
Nera is survived by her sisters, Dolores Castro and Sandra Benitez. She also cherished her many nieces and nephews who affectionally referred to her as Auntie.
Nera was preceded in death by both her parents, Ben and Rachel Quiñones; her husband, Bob Banks; and nieces, Vicki Stroman and Lisa Benitez.
Nera and Bob were the publishers of the Buffalo Press newspaper when they lived in Buffalo Texas for many years. Nera also worked for the Department of Veteran Affairs and retired after nearly 40 years. She received many awards and accolades through the years of her service with the Veterans Administration. Nera loved her family and friends and truly cherished spending time with them. She loved reading, playing cards, having great Mexican food, and her beloved dog, Daisy.
Visitation is scheduled for Monday, April 15th between 5:00-8:00 p.m., with the Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral and burial service will be held Tuesday, April 16th at 11:00 a.m., and a reception will follow. All services will be held at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale, Houston, Texas 77023.
All who knew and loved Nera, recognized her great caring, strength and tenacious attitude toward life. She will be greatly missed.
