Nell Hammett Cundiff, 89, of Houston, is at peace with the Lord after her death on Wednesday, the 11th of February 2015, following a short illness. Born to James David Hammett Sr. and Ruth Hurst Hammett on the 7th of March 1925, in Santa Rosa, Texas, she was the fourth of five children.
Nell graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1942 and moved to San Antonio, Texas where she married Leslie Walker “Skip” Cundiff Jr., at Randolph Air Force Base in 1949. The family moved to Amarillo, Texas in 1966, where Skip passed away in 1975. In 1983, Nell moved to Houston to be closer to her children. Her grandchildren, who called her “GN,” were the light of her life. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Nell was preceded in death by her husband; sister, Hassie Daniel; and brother, Walker Hammett. She is survived by daughter, Cathy Cundiff Pennington and husband Joe of Jersey Village; son, Leslie Walker Cundiff III and wife Josi of Bellaire; and grandchildren, Ryan Pennington and wife Megan, Eric Pennington, Laure Cundiff, and Leslie Cundiff. She also is survived by her brother, James David Hammett Jr.; sister, Helen Taylor and husband Sel Taylor; sister-in-law, Alafair Hammett; and eight nieces and nephews.
The family extends its thanks and appreciation to the staff at Methodist Hospital and to her devoted caregivers.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Monday, the 23rd of February, in the drawing room of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The interment is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 24th of February, at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, in San Antonio.
