Morton Allan Cohn passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, the 10th of April 2025, in Naples, Florida. An only child born on the 27th of January 1941, in Houston, Texas to Pearl Friedman Cohn and Abe Bernard Cohn.
He attended San Jacinto High School in Houston, and then graduated from the University of Texas, at Austin, with a Bachelor of Science in 1962, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Delta fraternity. Upon graduation, Morty joined the Air National Guard Reserves, stationed in Greenville, Mississippi. He then went on to receive a Master’s Degree from the London School of Economics in 1964.
He began working for The First Mortgage Company in Houston, before going on to a very successful career as a private investor. Morty had a calculator of a brain and was able to run numbers faster than almost anyone. He truly had a keen mind for business opportunities, land development, and a love for the power of compounding.
During his life he served on numerous boards, including Memorial Hermann Hospital Foundation, Texas Heart Institute, Cash America, and he was a Lifetime Director of the 100 Club.
When not looking for his next big investment, Morty was an avid golfer, bird hunter and fisherman, and he always had a beloved labrador retriever by his side. He enjoyed traveling all over the world partaking in these activities with friends. He loved high birds in Argentina, as much as the 17th hole on The Old Course at St. Andrews.
Morty met and married Bobby Sue Smith of Houston and his life changed forever. Together they had three daughters. The family spent much time at their home in Chub Cay, Bahamas, where they created lifelong friendships and lasting memories.
As the girls grew older, the family’s focus shifted to the equestrian world of hunters and jumpers. With their trainer, Ms. Allana Featherstone, they traveled across the country, competing at the highest level and Morty became the quintessential horse show dad, rarely missing a competition.
Later in life, he enjoyed being a member of The Rolling Rock Club, Double Eagle Golf Club, and the Naples Yacht Club.
After Bobby Sue’s passing, Morty, once again, found love and happiness with Ms. Sheila Ultes, of Naples, Florida. Together, they spent a considerable amount of time traveling with new found friends. She brought him a great deal of joy.
The family would like to send a very special thanks to Ms. Cynthia McElveen, Mr. Sam Jones, Ms. Karen Garcia, Mr. Howard Lewis, Mr. Cleveland Bailey, and Ms. Liliana Rivera for their many years of love and dedication to the Cohn family.
Morty is predeceased by his parents, Pearl Friedman Cohn and Abe Bernard Cohn and his wife Bobby Sue Smith Cohn. He is survived by his loving and dedicated daughters, Kirby Cohn McCool and her husband Scott McCool, and their children: Lane McCool, Khaki McCool, and Thomas McCool; Lindsay Cohn Holstead and her husband Rand Holstead, and their daughters: Mia Holstead and Randall Holstead; Courtney Cohn Hopson, and her children: Sloan Hopson and Bo Hopson IV.
He is also survived by cousins Gerry Stool and wife Claudia; Louis Allen Stool; Michael Stool; Kenny Freidman, and wife Ann; and several extended cousins.
All are invited to greet the family during a Celebration of Life Reception from one o’clock until three o’clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 22nd of April, at River Oaks Country Club, 1600 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston.
Prior to the Celebration of Life Reception, the family will have gathered for a private interment, officiated by Rabbi Steven M. Gross of Houston Congregation of Reform Judaism, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests donations be directed towards the charitable organization of one’s choice.
