Mona grew up in different locations as a very young child, including Altus, OK, Waxahachie, TX, Vidalia, LA, and finished her school years in Sarepta, LA. She is a graduate of Sarepta High School in 1976 with honors while also on the ladies basketball team. She then attended Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA earning school credits in business and chemistry.
She started a family with Scott and lived primarily in Houston, TX with brief stints in Baton Rouge, LA and St Louis, MO before moving back to Houston in 1993 until her death. They had their two children who quickly became her main focus in life. Beyond being a great mother, she also spent time in leadership roles of girl scouts, cheerleading groups and helped manage a local youth football league. A Christian, Mona was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Her work journey took her into industrial manufacturing where she spent her career working first for industrial component manufacturers in Louisiana and then finally for industrial equipment suppliers in Houston for over 25 years. From a sales role, she moved into office management and then finally as a senior buyer for major petrochemical companies and engineering contractors. She was always at the top of her game and was very successful in providing a leadership role for any task or project she was given. She retired in 2018 in order to spend more time with her family and be a great grandmother full time.
Mona was an incredible cook and made even the simplest meal a wonderful experience. She studied cook books with a passion and had a knack for taking the formal recipes and enhancing them with her unique touches of seasoning always exceeding expectations. Her family and friends all looked forward to anytime she was planning a meal because they knew something great was coming.
Above everything, her greatest passion was her family which didn’t stop when her two children were grown and out of the house. She not only turned her attention eventually to her three beautiful grandchildren, but she also helped serve as a primary care giver to her mother-in-law and then her own mother when they became ill late in life. Mona was always unselfish in her assistance and made their last years as comfortable as possible. She truly went above and beyond in her focus on them which was greatly appreciated by the rest of the family knowing that Mona was there for them.
Throughout her life, she shared her inner light to all especially her family with whom she traveled extensively including trips to Europe of several occasions. She also loved road tripping around the USA with her husband and friends exploring new places and the scenes along the way.
Most recently Mona was faced with a diagnosis of breast cancer which she faced bravely and with the help of MD Anderson’s team, she battled successfully at first. She was then faced with some serious complications that took her from us way too soon. Just like in life, Mona faced the end with others on her mind and fought bravely with her husband and daughter by her side until the very end.
The outpouring of love and sympathy from friends around the world is overwhelming. She truly touched the hearts of many, many people along her journey. She will be forever missed and truly loved.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to breast cancer research in care of MD Anderson.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.heightsfuneralhome.com for the Moreland family.
