Mildred was born in Comanche, Texas, on September 24, 1928, and was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ellen Kasting, siblings John, Nina, Robert, Leona, Anna, and Delores. She was also preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Karen Sampson.
Mildred is survived by her children: Karen’s husband, Mike, Jerry Williams (Julie), Debbie Slate (Dennis), and Patricia Clifton (Michael). She is also survived by her grandchildren: Katrina Rose, Kasey Sampson, Elizabeth Williams, Shelby Miller (Nathan), Kait Sampson, Jessica Williams, Kellie Hall (James), Daniel Williams and Sarah Clifton; and great-grandchildren: Riley Rose, Chloe Rose, Landon Hall, and Braxton and Brooks Miller, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family and friends.
Mildred grew up during the great depression in a German family on the family farm outside of McGregor, Texas and later in the Rio Grande Valley. Although life was difficult during this time, some of her favorite memories were growing up with her brothers and sisters on the farm. These life lessons carried on the rest of her life as she retained a love for growing things in her garden, and always had animals running around the house. She developed a great work ethic and worked diligently in the retail and hotel industries during her lifetime.
Family was always the most important thing in her life. Teaching the next generation how to cook her signature dish of “chicken and dumplings” or baking up a storm of cookies, breads, and cakes brought her great joy!
She was an active member of the VFW Auxiliary for many years and loved the friends made through this organization. She also volunteered at the Alley Theater and Hobby Center. She loved working with the folks who would attend, but if the truth be known what she really loved was getting to see all those great shows for free!
After being raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Mildred spent most of her adult life in the Houston area, and the last several months were spent in the memory care unit Soldalis Senior Center in Deer Park, Texas. The family wants the Soldalis staff to know how much we appreciate the incredible care given by so many, especially Coco and Lisa.
Services for Mildred will take place on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at the Pat H. Foley & Company located at 1200 West 34th Street, Houston, Texas 77018. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 5:00 PM with a short celebration of life service at 5:00 PM.
