Mildred L. Harris was born on December 11, 1942 in Glenridge, NJ to the late Louis and Mary Jane Coleman. She was preceded in death by her husband James (Jack) Harris, daughter Julia Bailey and step son James (Ronnie) Harris.
Mildred was raised in Montclair where she was educated in the Montclair Public School system. Mildred was a federal employee and worked at the Picatinny Arsenal military base in Wharton, NJ and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in East Orange, NJ. After 25 years of dedicated service, she retired in 1995.
During her career at the VA Hospital, Mildred met the love of her life, James (Jack) R. Harris at a job sponsored function, and the two married on September 16, 1984. Mildred and Jack had a blended family and loved their children; Diane, Julia, Mary Jane, Gerald, and James (affectionately known as Ronnie). After retirement, Mildred and Jack decided to move south and relocated to Tomball, TX. Mildred was a long time member of First Baptist Church located in Nutley, NJ.
Mildred was an avid sports fan and became a die-hard Houston Texans and Rockets fan. Mildred also enjoyed cooking. A few of her favorite dishes were mac and cheese, sweet potato pie, and cheesecake. Mildred was strong, kind, loving, and most of all loved the Lord.
Mildred leaves behind her children, Diane Rivers and her husband Milton Rivers, Mary Jane Gilmore and Gerald Gilmore and his wife Evelyn, her brother, Ronald Coleman and his wife Pamela, special niece, Ammy (Chris) Plummer; grandchildren and great grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Mildred will surely be missed by many.
A visitation for Mildred will be held Thursday, June 2, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Brookside Funeral Home - Champions, 3410 Cypress Creek Parkway, Houston, TX 77068. A funeral service will occur Thursday, June 2, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 3410 Cypress Creek Parkway, Houston, TX 77068. A committal service will occur Thursday, June 2, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038. A reception will occur Thursday, June 2, 2022 from 1:45 PM to 3:45 PM, 3410 Cypress Creek Parkway, Houston, TX 77068.
