Michelle René Granderson was born November 8, 1951 in Washington, D.C. to Ruth Jarrett and Leon Banks. As a child, Michelle and her family lived in various locations due to her fathers’ military career in the Air Force, cultivating her love for travel. Michelle attended Clark College in Atlanta where she received her undergraduate degree and continued on to obtain her master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Texas Southern University.
Michelle married Paul Granderson on August 18, 1979 in Atlanta, Georgia. As a long-time resident of Houston and the surrounding area, Michelle worked in social services helping families and individuals with behavioral health concerns. When her daughter, Danielle Renee was born, Michelle turned her attention to raising her daughter and managing the household. For many years, Michelle volunteered extensively in the community and was known for her involvement in children’s programs in local churches and for her active leadership within Houston’s Society for the Advancement of Floral Design as the community outreach coordinator.
Also known for her superb talent with making crafts, Michelle regularly blessed her family and friends with beautiful hand-crafted gifts for their homes which became cherished family heirlooms. Michelle loved traveling with her husband, Paul and collecting unique keepsakes. Michelle was chronically ill for the last 4 years, but her love for life and her sense of humor remained.
Michelle passed away on Monday, August 10, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital in the Woodlands Texas. She was preceded in death by her father, Leon Banks, her mother, Ruth Jarrett and her brother, Leon Banks, Jr. Leaving to mourn her cherished memory and to celebrate her legacy are her husband, Paul Granderson and her daughter, Danielle Granderson, as well as a host of extended family and close friends.
Visitation will be from 10-12 noon on Saturday, August 15th with services to follow immediately at Faith Church, located at 7755 Fairbanks N. Houston Road from 12:00 -1:00 pm with Pastor Nathan Rouse presiding. The interment will follow at Memorial Oakes Funeral Home and Cemetery, with arrangements by Brookside Funeral Home Cypress Creek.
