Michele Hughen Gurley, 78, died Monday, December 12, 2022. Born October 24, 1944, in Houston, Texas to Thomas Alfred Hughen and Gwendolyn Anderson Hughen, who preceded her death. She was the beloved wife of Derrel Gene Gurley, who died January 28, 2009.
She is survived by her brother, Thomas Hughen, Jr., and sisters Janis Hughen Bell and husband Richard Bell, and Anita Hughen Butcher and husband James Butcher.
Michele was a loving aunt to Diana Hughen Griffith and John Griffith and their sons Johnny Griffith and wife Meredith Griffith, Jordan Griffith, and Jack Griffith; her niece, Elizabeth Butcher Jantz and husband Greg Jantz, and their children Margaret and Thomas; and her niece, Leigh Erin Butcher Melson and husband Chris Melson and their sons Christopher and James.
Michele graduated from Lamar High School, attended Sam Houston State University, and graduated with honors from the University of Texas, Austin.
She was an elementary school teacher in Austin and Houston. She taught third grade at Bonham Elementary School, Houston for many years and was a strong influence still remembered by pupils.
Michele Gurley was a rock and a dear friend to many people her entire life. She was always an advocate for someone hurt or in need. Michele had an easy-going positive wisdom she shared easily. Her life was defined and enhanced by her volunteer work, her care for others, love of family, and devotion to God.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Monday, December 19, 2022, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, TX 77079, Phone 281-497-1500, followed by burial at 12:00 P.M. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home & Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway, 77079, Phone 281-497-2210.
