Michael Vernon Matthews, 63, Somerville, Texas, (formerly of Katy, Houston and Montgomery, TX) passed away suddenly at home on July 10, 2022. Mike was born on September 19, 1958, in Beaumont, TX, to Jay Kay Mathews and Mary Patricia (Patsy) Hill Mathews.
Mike Graduated from Katy High School in 1977 and attended Los Angeles City College. Mike recently semi-retired from his construction and remodeling business. He served proudly and with honor for the United States Marine Corps from October 1979-1983. Throughout his service, he was mainly stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Some of his greatest military accomplishments include, Marksmanship Instructor, Assault Amphibious Vehicle (AAV) Crewman, and Rifle Expert.
As a proud Marine Veteran, he was dedicated to God and Country. The Marines made him a man of great honor, discipline, and respect. He was an avid lifelong fan of the Houston Astros, and never turned down an opportunity to go to a game with his family, or have the ballgame playing on the TV at home. He was always a helping hand with friends and family and provided emotional support to all. He never failed to show up every single time, no matter the need.
While all these accomplishments led to his success in life in the Marine and Veteran, his proudest accomplishment was simply being a committed, devoted dad. Mike is survived by sons Mike Hallmark an wife Sarah, Jake Matthews, daughter Annie Mathews-Bobet and her husband, Andrew.
His passions were baseball coaching for Jake and Annie, fishing, camping, and hunting. He instilled all of these passions into his children. He made sure Annie could shoot with the best of them. These trips with his children and friends are what with his children and friends are what true blessings and memories are made of. As a father, he ensured his children were raised with the same attributes of his life – Love, Honor, Respect, and Discipline – in all they do.
He is further survived by three brothers, Matt Mathews, Jeff Matthews, and Stanton Matthews, along with their families. Sister-in-law Kathe Melnikoff and husband, Mike. Aunts and Uncles Polly and Paul Anderson, Se and Neal Lindsey, Kim Hill (Smitty). He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mike had legions of friends, and the family wishes to acknowledge those that served or are currently serving as his honorary guard.
Mike as met at heaven’s gate by his parents, brothers Steven and Jay, and sister Lou Anne Matthews. Aunts and Uncles Homer Hill, Arthur Hill, Smitty Hill, Ricard Hill, sister Lou Ann Hill, Barbara Trahan, and Clyde Trahan. Along with the mother of his three children, Susan Matthews-Reiter.
A service will be held at 10:00am Monday August 1, 2022, located at American Heritage funeral home, 10710 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston TX 77038. Committal immediately following service at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038.
