Meredith Elise Singh

Meredith was born in Louisville, KY on March 4, 1994 to Donald Morgan (Don) and Laurie Smith Stephens. She attended Bush Elementary, Abell Junior High, and Lee High School(Class of 2012) in Midland, TX. Meredith accepted Christ as her Savior on 1-13-01 and was baptized at Crestview Baptist Church in Midland. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School to children when she was in high school. In fifth grade Meredith started horseback riding which she enjoyed through high school. She competed in Eventing on her horse, Dasher. Meredith was an excellent student, always scoring high on standardized testing even though it caused her much anxiety.

Meredith did her junior year of high school in Varanasi India as a foreign exchange student. She was accepted to Loyola University in Chicago but after a month on campus she went back to India. This was the first of several trips to India. When Meredith got back from her foreign exchange year, she taught herself Hindi by talking with her friends in India and using Rosetta Stone. Self taught, she could speak, read, and write Hindi. In October 2014, Meredith obtained a work visa to spend a year in New Zealand. While there Meredith met and married Sukhjinder (Sukhi) Singh on January 12, 2015. Sukhi grew up in Punjab India and was living in New Zealand to attend college. They moved to Houston in October 2015.

Meredith was a hard worker. She started at Walter’s Restaurant during high school and worked in lots of other restaurant jobs in Midland, New Zealand, and Houston before getting her final job outside the home at Macy’s in the cosmetics department. She loved the job but had to leave it due to severe pregnancy related nausea. Avijeet (Avi) was born May 8, 2017. Avi became ill with bacterial meningitis on July 13, 2018. Meredith never left Texas Children’s Hospital where he was hospitalized for a month. She went toe to toe with the staff as a fierce advocate for her son. Her dedication to breastfeeding was an important part of his recovery. On May 13, 2019 Jasmin Kaur was born. Meredith loved her children and loved to take them places: the zoo, children’s museum, science museum, library, Burroughs Park and many more. Meredith loved to read and left a list of her favorites she would like her children to read.

Meredith was accepted to the nursing program at Lone Star Tomball in the fall of 2020. Her goal was to be an ER nurse and she had accepted a position at LBJ Hospital in Houston. She took her final exam and completed the program the day she died. Meredith had struggled with anxiety her whole life. She had recently started treatment for her multiple diagnoses. Her final note said taking her life was nobody’s fault, that her brain was ill, her mind tormented her, she could not take it anymore and to forgive her.

Meredith leaves her husband Sukhi, son Avi, daughter Jasmin, parents Don and Laurie Stephens, sister Clair (Tyler Sain), grandparents Lloyd and Farrisa Smith, grandfather Leo Stephens, uncle Dale Stephens, Aunt Patti Smith Callegari, cousins Travis Stephens, Ann Marie Callegari Dominguez, Claudia Callegari.

Meredith is predeceased by her grandmother Lois Stephens.

A memorial service will be held Monday, May 16 at The Woodlands First Baptist Church 7:00 PM. A Sikh service will be Wednesday, May 18 10:30 AM at Garden Oaks Funeral Home 13430 Bellaire Blvd Houston, TX 77083
