Mel, you’ve been on my mind lately , but that is nothing new . I hadn’t seen you in 5 years before your too early of a passing . I miss your laugh and know you’re up above in a boat over the sea Some place . I wish I had seen you sooner ! I wish I know what happened to you and why you left everyone so soon ?! Please give me some insight . Not knowing is dreadful . You are missed !

At 6 minutes after 6:00 a.m. this morning I woke up and knew it was 6 years since you formally were escorted to Heaven.  I hugged the beautiful flower vase that you gave me that I cherish and cried myself to sleep.  Thank you for coming to say good-bye to me before you left for Heaven.  You knew I loved you unconditionally and always will.  Of all of the beautiful songs I wrote for you, this one was so special:  "I dreamed we met on a rocky shoreline many years ago...Man, I'll take you in my arms and keep you from the cold.  It never was your silver, man; it never was your gold.  My Love, I'll take you in my arms and keep you from the cold.  It never was your silver, Mel, it never was your gold."  It was just you, Powerman.  You were so very kind, so very gracious, you were such a gentleman.  Not a day goes by that I don't remember your beautiful smile.  I will see you in Heaven. To all our friends,  Mel was a great man and good friend to the Evans family.  I met Mel in 1969 at our office and he encouraged me as we worked on many buildings.  Now my father Bob now uncle Ross are with Mel.   Blessings to all who knew Mel and those who are still around.

I missed your departure by four years,  but then we had so many highs and lows together,  so many wild and wacky experiences and challenges on this life's jorney that we thought would never end.  Lots of laughter and wonderful times. I was deeply saddened to learn today of Mel's passing almost 3 yrs ago.  I will cherish my memories of him and miss him always, as I am sure will everyone who knew and loved him. My grief is a bit lessened by the thought and hope that, at my own passing, we will meet again.  I wish for him from the bottom of my heart everlasting Peace, Light and Happiness.

I worked for Mel back in the early 80's after I got out the navy. Mel always had a trip on Friday and if was loading his luggage or fueling his plane, he always friendly word for u and who could forget that million dollar smile of his

well, mel ... you're right where you belong ... with god. gotcha .. even a good joke i can see you smile that evil grin .... rest in peace as your memory will live on and on and on .....

I met Mel during my youthful year's of Clear Lake and actually watched the 2# Atrium buildings go up.

I had been to several of his parties in Nassau Bay and was overwhelmed of this person ability to entertain and pro-tray levels of communications to others only the few ever understood.

Regardless of what others say, he was always kind to me an being allowed to hang around while the big boys played.

I was only 17 years old back then, but had some wonderful and fun times to go back down memory lane anytime I want.

Myself, I will always remember those times and hope you are still having them where ever you are now at Mel.

How do you capture the essence of someone like Mel Powers? . . . 
A giant among men, a provider for so many, a brilliant, multidimensional grass-roots entrepreneur; a loyal friend and fierce adversary; an athlete, and a dynamo with an insatiable appetite for knowledge and experiences of every kind.

Mel and I had some fabulous journeys together both in business and in our social lives; but if one shared experience in Mel's life defined him for me, it was the quick land inspection trip we took to Sealy, Texas the day before Thanksgiving many, many years ago.

On our way, we picked up a bedraggled looking hitch hiker, named Jose, who was headed for Brookshire.  Jose, though rumpled, was thankful for the ride and very upbeat.  He had just found a job and, although still broke, was happy, anticipating being with his pregnant wife and her family for the holidays.

Mel, as usual, asked a million questions, and I could see his admiration for Jose building as Jose talked of how he expected hard work and dedication to his new job to start him towards a great future for his family.  There was an obvious connection, as Mel must have been thinking of the long road he had traveled from his own childhood.  When we let Jose out in Brookshire, Mel slipped a $100 bill into his hand and wished him a Happy Thanksgiving and successful life.

The $100 was not to impress Jose or me, but rather to reward that spark of determination to succeed that Mel had immediately identified in Jose.  That was Mel; perhaps not the easiest man for most to know well, but a good and generous man to the core.

All of us would like to think that we made it on our own; but the truth is that the spark Mel saw in Jose, he also saw in many of us, when he gave each of us our start so long ago.  Thank you Mel, we will miss you.

  I meet Mel in l971. He attended my wedding in l973. I have fond and fun memories. We completed many real estate transactions together. Ihave been in the homes, buildings and on the yacht. Mel was a gentleman. He was good, kind and generous to me. We were good friends. Ishall always remember the good times. My deepest and sincere sympathy to the Powers Family

I started working for Mel at the age of 15 at PowersAir.  Always a gentlemen, always giving me advise for the future the first being when I graduated "Go to college, just don't study basket weaving!"  We stayed in touch over the years with advise and friendship all along the way.  To the Powers family and close friends, my deepest condolences.  God Bless you Mel!  You will be DEEPLY missed!

There is not enough room on this page for all the stories and fond memories I have about Mel.We had our share of ups and downs and I don't mean just in planes or helicopters. Two things, A true measure of a friend is one who sticks by you when times are tough, Mel once sent me an envelope to Tahoe and said come on back home, this was after a job went south on me and we had had another spat, now that is a friend. He gave me great latitude in bussiness to do what I wanted and let me grow in my field, but the single best thing he did was introduce me to the love of my life and truly best friend Jan.I may not be able to tell all the stories but I will surely cherish them!I will miss you my friend.

Mel was a always a perfect gentlemen and treated my family with so much respect and kindness.  My husband and I went on several trips with Mel on his private jet.  Those trips are very found memories for me.  Our sincerest sympathy to the Powers family.

My prayers and thoughts are with the Powers family.  I have many memories from when Billy worked with Mel.  I always remember Mel's sense of humor and his ability to never meet a stranger. He will be missed by all who knew him.

The love of friends and family will carry you through this grief. Please know you're in our thoughts daily. We are so sorry for your loss.

I want to say that Mel is in my prayers.   I worked for Mel in the early 80's at the Power buildings in Clear Lake for his Title Company.  Still after all of these years you could not ask for a better boss.  I cared deeply for Mel and still see him look at me shake his head and say Kelledy!!!  I have alot of fond memories of his taking the office to Jason's for a drink after work.  Mel will always be in our hearts forever.  I know he is sitting on a yacht and enjoying the water somewhere,. MLP, another Houston legend now gone. To say you had an interesting and full life in your time here on Earth is certainly an understatement. May you RIP! I met you back in 1967 at Willowick with Candace and the girls. Hard to believe it was 43 years ago.

God forgive us allâ€¦ because each and every one of us have done things that we were not even very proud of!  As one of Mel's tailors for 20+years, :(I'm sure he had several:), I can say, "he was very good to me".  Worked me like crazy sometimes... had some of the craziest ideas about making a leather garment, however, I managed to come thru and loved every minute of it; treated me, my kids and family with much love and respect; me, always rushingâ€¦did not stop by the house, just to say hello when he ran across my mind early last week and for that I am so very sorry.
