On Monday morning April 5th, Mei Yee Gaw passed away peacefully. Mei was born in Hoiping, Canton, China. She was married at the age of 19 to Walton Gaw and they remained married for 73 years. She came to the United States in 1956 with her oldest daughter, Won. She joined her husband and father-in-law in their grocery store business. Their first store was on Jensen Drive and they later moved to a larger store on Depriest Street. For 35 years she and her husband worked 12 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide a better life for their children. When she was able to sneak away from her hard work at the store, she tended to her garden and raised chickens in the backyard. She also achieved getting her driver's license and US citizenship. She retired in 1991 and enjoyed family life, traveling with friends and spending more time gardening and cooking. Anyone who knows Mei would know that she was an amazing cook. She always cooked more than enough food and any visitors who were present at dinner time were always invited to stay and eat. It was no coincidence that people just seemed to drop in to visit around dinner time! Chinese New Year celebrations were particularly tasty!
She is survived by her husband Walton; daughter Won and husband Harry; son Herbert and wife Mary; daughter Judy and husband Andrew; son Wilson and wife Trudy; grandchildren Bryan, Erin, Kristin, Tiffany, Ryan, Christopher, and Melissa; great-grandchildren Harper, Ethan, Claire, Emerson, Jackson and Reid; brother-in-law Allen; nephew Jonathan; and niece Lauren.
Mei loved being a mother and being around family and friends. This always put a smile on her face. Thank you for joining us today to celebrate the amazing life of Mei Gaw.
