McMorris Mitchell was the youngest child of Thomas Charles Mitchell and Beatrice Burton Mitchell. He was born on February 19, 1942, in Monroe, Louisiana. McMorris Mitchell, affectionately known as Mitch, transitioned to his heavenly home on June 24, 2023, in Houston, Texas, after a long, hard, and valiant fight with cancer.
Mitch grew up in the Booker T. Washington community of Monroe, Louisiana, and graduated from Carrol High School before joining the Air Force. He became a pilot and flew planes in the Vietnam War. He rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel before retiring and embarking on his second career in education. As a lover of education, he served as a math teacher, counselor, assistant principal, and principal before his second retirement in San Antonio, Texas. Afterward, he kept busy playing golf, gardening, and spending time with family.
He met his wife Catherine Hanson, and they married on June 7, 1968. Through this union, they were blessed with two daughters, Kimberly McLeod and Kelly Brown. Mitch was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Beatrice Mitchell; his brothers, Thomas Jr., Wilbert, and Alfred; and his sister Ora Lee. Left to cherish his memories are his daughters Kimberly McLeod (Vance Guidry), Kelly Brown (Julian Brown) and seven grandchildren- John McLeod, Mitchell McLeod, Micah McLeod, Kaitlyn Brown, Madison Brown, Makenzie Brown, and Kamryn Brown. He also has a host of extended family and friends that will remember his kindness, talents, and spirit.
