M.C. Tyer, age 100, of Houston died too soon on Aug 26, 2011. Born in Shelby County, Texas on May 9, 1911 he lived in the Center and Timpson area until he joined the Army in WWII. After the war he moved to Houston, married Hattie Maye Threadgill and started a family. He owned service stations in north Houston and the Aldine area. Then he did security work until starting his last career. For the last 15+ years he has been well-known to the folks in northwest Houston as “that surprisingly old” greeter for Wal-Mart. He proudly reported to work until 3 weeks before his death. He was a Master Mason for nearly 57 yrs. He was preceded in death by wife Hattie Maye Tyer and daughter Beverly Tyer. He is survived by daughters Mary Frazier (Greg), Cheryl Tyer, Brenda Young (Richard), son M.C. Tyer, Jr. (Lynnette); 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren (14th due any day). Deeply respected by those who knew him, his strong values were the foundation of a large and close-knit family. His grandchildren adored his stories of his life and his spirited lessons in checkers and dominoes. His loss has left a great void. Services to be held at Brookside Champions Monday Aug 29, 10a.m. Visitation 5:30-8:30, Sunday Aug 28. Interment to follow in Brookside Memorial Park.
