Mayes Ervin Fuller, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away October 31, 2023 and entered the portals of Heaven and looked on the face of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Mayes was born on September 8, 1933, in Houston, Texas, to parents Sydney Mayes and Lizzie Lee Fuller.
Education was always important to Mayes. He excelled in his classes throughout elementary, junior high, and high school. He won the John Marshall Junior High School Library Club award in 1946. As well as making his academics a priority, Mayes lettered in bowling and tennis at Jeff Davis High School. He graduated from Rice University in 1955 and later became a Certified Public Accountant in 1967. Mayes always had an ear for languages. He was fluent in German and Spanish, and he knew quite a bit of French and Russian.
Mayes met and married the love of his life, Minnie Carolyn Fuller. They had two daughters, Karen and Janice. In their early years, they attended Trinity Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon. Later, he continued to serve as a deacon at Tallowood Baptist Church in Houston and then at First Baptist Church in Hallettsville.
Later, Mayes and Carolyn moved to L & M Brangus Ranch near Hallettsville. Taking care of cattle was a family affair. He also moved his CPA firm to the town square.
Mayes and Carolyn knew how to have fun. They participated in square dancing, going on Model T tours across the Hill Country with the Space City T’s, and traveling. They took river boats tours and spent two white Christmases in Alaska, as well as other excursions.
Mayes is preceded in death by his beloved Carolyn, his parents, and sister Frances Cody. He is survived by his daughter Karen Robinson and her husband Kent, daughter Janice Smeltzer, grandson Connor Smeltzer, and nephews and nieces. Mayes lived well and loved well and left a beautiful legacy.
