Maxine, better known as Frankie was born a twin in Creelsboro, Kentucky to Fred Cleo Garner
and Betty Murphy Garner. She was the last survivor of her eleven brothers and sisters. Maxine
was proud of the fact that her family, the Garners came to America around 1770. Frankie had a
joyful childhood playing in the family tobacco fields. Her father had purchased a school bus as
the family car and their house was always filled with children and friends. After Maxine
graduated from high school, she and a sister followed her brother who was in the Army to New
York. It was there that Frankie met James David McMaster or as she called him Jimmy D.
After dating for 3 weeks they got married and were married for over 70 years. After JD was
honorably discharged from the Air Force, they went to Texas where he enrolled at Texas A&M.
Frankie got her cosmetology license and had fun styling hair. She used to say she earned her
Mrs. at A&M. From there they lived in San Antonio, Seguin, Edinburg, Houston and retiring on
their farm in Cypress Texas. Frankie and J.D. were married for over 70 years and spent nearly
every day together working and enjoying life to the fullest. They had various businesses over
the years including McMaster’s hair salon, McMaster’s Rice Hull Compost, McMaster’s Nursery
and Blackberries of Houston. Frankie loved her family, and friends. She was always a fighter
for what she thought was right.
Survived by daughter, Susan McMaster Turell, and husband, David J. Turell, M.D. Brother in
law, Marshall (Tootie) McMaster and wife, Pauline. Nephews: John Paul McMaster and wife,

given to Frankie. Elda made Frankie’s days at Spring Cypress special. Additional thanks to her
physician, Dr. Kelly Englund, for my Mom’s longevity and care. She truly loved and watched
over my Mom like she was her family. I can not thank Elda and Dr Kelly enough for helping
make my Mom’s last year full of love.
