Mattie Jewel Young was born July 17,1933 to Alfred and Nannie McGilbray in Midway, Texas. Out of their beautiful union she was one of eight children. Growing up in a Christian home, Mattie attended and was baptized at Antioch Church of Christ in Midway, Texas. She graduated from Albert Lee School and shortly thereafter she moved to Houston, Texas.
hen she moved to Houston she started attending Fifth Ward Church of Christ. Mattie met and married Richard C. Young in June 1959.To this forty-one-year union five children were born. When she moved to Houston, she started attending Fifth Ward Church of Christ. Mattie, Will Alfred, Anna Laura, and Nettie along with other family members were part of the founding foundation of establishing Kashmere Gardens Church of Christ. She was a member at Kashmere Gardens Church of Christ for 15 years. While on her Christian journey she also attended Laura Koppe Church of Christ, where she was a faithful servant for over 20 years.
Mattie worked as a domestic worker for 61 years for various families whom she loved and loved her in return especially the Gregg and Fields families. Mattie loved to bake, shop and watch her beloved Dallas Cowboys play football.
Mattie was preceded in death by her husband Richard C. Young, her parents, Alfred and Nannie McGilbray and all her siblings; sister Jennie Lee McGilbray, sister Anna Laura Hubbard, brother Will Alfred McGilbray (Bessie), Will Anderson McGilbray (Elmira), Sarah “Estelle” Williams (Snell), and Fred McGilbray (Mattie). She leaves five children to cherish her memory: Patricia Malone, Charles Young, Claudette Young, Leatrice Young and Carolyn Young. She also leaves to cherish her memory 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
