Matt was born on the 24th of July 1965 in Gallup, New Mexico. After stops in New Providence, New Jersey and Westminster, California, he moved to what would become his permanent home in the Houston area in 1970. Matt grew up in a typical 1970’s suburb in the Clear Lake area. There he developed a tight-knit group of friends in elementary, middle and high school who remained his close friends for the rest of his life.
He attended Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Business in 1987 and returned to Clear Lake where he began a professional career that spanned over 35 years. His initial job was in procurement in support of NASA and he continued in procurement and facilities management in roles of increasing responsibility with Celanese Chemical, Waste Management, WillBros and CBRE.
Matt was the baby of the family and developed an amazing bond with his mother that would last the remainder of both of their lives. While he never married, Matt became a fixture in the lives of his nieces and nephews who would often be seen accompanying him to golf games and sporting events. In 2012 he relocated to the west side of Houston to be closer to his family.
Matt was a faithful supporter of Houston’s local sports teams and delighted in hosting friends and family at innumerable games at NRG Stadium and Minute Maid Park. But his true love was the game of golf. He spent countless hours on the course and at the range pursuing the coveted and elusive title of scratch golfer. Golf took him all over the United States, to Mexico and Central America and ultimately to Europe in 2016 where he achieved his lifelong goal of walking the Swilcan Bridge on the 18th hole on the old course at St Andrews, Scotland. Matt’s golf legacy also includes the Clear Lake Invitational Tournament which he founded, organized and managed every year and in 2024 will celebrate its 32nd year.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Patricia Agosto. Matt is survived by sister Ann Dodge and her husband Pete Dodge; his brothers, Tom and Andy and his wife Kathleen; nieces, Jenna Strube and Avery Agosto; and nephews, Adam Dodge and Bobby and Tony Agosto.
Matt will be remembered as the consummate professional, a friend true and dear, a warm, generous and loving brother and uncle and a gentle, caring human being. He will be dearly missed.
A celebration of Matt’s life is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 7th of October in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. KINDLY NOTE: Those attending are encouraged to wear their favorite golf or Astros attire.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family and share remembrances of Matt during a reception to be held in the adjacent grand foyer.
