

Born on November 4, 1926 in Duluth, Minnesota, her family moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1937, where she and her older sister Betty attended Alamo Heights schools. She was the drum majorette in high school and was involved in a variety of academic clubs. Mary attended the University of Texas where she received her bachelor of science degree.
After several years of secretarial work she met and married Philip Vandervoort Wiles, formerly a cargo pilot in the US Army Air Corps China-Burma-India theater during World War II. Phil’s business transfers brought them to Houston shortly after the marriage where they lived and raised two children happily in Piney Point Village for 47 years. They were married for 57 years until Phil’s death in 2008.
Mary belonged to the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, the Junior League of Houston, the PEO Sisterhood and Chapelwood United Methodist Church. Her last years were spent at Treemont Retirement Community, where she enjoyed a variety of music performances and Bible studies. She was most recently moved to Brookdale Shadowlake Assisted Living.
Mary is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Keene and husband David, son Philip V. Wiles Jr. and wife Karen, grandchildren Andrew and Stewart Keene, Jennifer Stewart , Jeremy and Jeffrey Wiles, and 11 great grandchildren.
There will be a private family graveside service at Memorial Oaks Cemetery on Monday, January 4, 2021. After the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted there will be a celebration of life service for her at Chapelwood United Methodist Church. Details of this service will be provided when available.
