Mary Mock Slattery passed away October 21, 2014. She was born March 22, 1921 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to the late Alfred Mock and Mary Boyd Mock. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Rem J. Slattery, Jr., and brothers, Milton Mock and Fred Mock.
She is survived by three sons, Rem Slattery, III and wife Leslie of North Little Rock, Arkansas, John Slattery and wife Deborah of Tomball, TX, Steve Slattery of Houston, TX, one daughter, Sally Sugarek and husband Steve of Houston, TX, six grandchildren, Scott (Thuy-Ai), Sommer (Phillip), Courtney, Lauren (Grant), Lynn, Lee, and five great grandchildren.
Mary lived a remarkable life, raising four children over a 40 year span while enjoying such activities as singing with a newly formed operatic group in Newport News, Virginia and as a founding member in the chorus of the Tulsa, Oklahoma Opera in her 20's. After that, she became graciously involved in the chores of motherhood as Cub Scout leader, then Girl Scout leader as children came and went. Those were days of constant chauffeuring as her children became involved in school activities, sports and scouts. She spent time volunteering at the schools, and assisted in teaching children's classes at her church. In addition, she was a certified water safety instructor and taught swimming lessons through the Girl Scout Organization.
Mary later worked as a real estate agent and traveled extensively throughout the world with friends while in her 60's through early 80's. When she was not traveling, still a willing volunteer, she managed to help out regularly at a local food pantry, and in caring for her grandchildren, whenever she was needed. Her hobby of genealogy took her to a number of libraries in the southern U.S. and eventually led to her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Society of New England Women.
Mary enjoyed many friendships made through membership in St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church and by taking up bowling in her 60's to early 80's. Always a positive lady of great faith, her greatest joy in life was visiting and keeping up with family and friends. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend!
Mary's family would like to thank the staff of Park Manor Southbelt SNF for their years of wonderful care, as well as Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital and Kindred Hospital Clear Lake for the dedicated care they provided.
Family and friends gathered for a visitation on Sunday, October 26 from 5:30pm until 8:00pm in the chapel of Waltrip Funeral Directors, where the Rosary was recited at 6:30pm. The Funeral Liturgy was held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 27 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 10688 Shadow Wood with Reverend Niall J. Nolan as celebrant. The Rite of Committal followed in the Oaks Mausoleum Chapel at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the charity of your choice.
