Mary always wanted to be a teacher. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin before embarking on her more than 40-year career as a math teacher in Houston, Texas. She taught 9th grade Algebra at Woodson Junior High before moving to The High School for Engineering Professions on the Booker T. Washington Campus where she taught Honors Algebra and Geometry. In retirement Mary volunteered as a math tutor at KIPP Connect Houston Middle School and Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School of Houston.
She was a compassionate teacher but a stern disciplinarian with high expectations. She taught her students how to think through and solve math problems, knowing that with those skills, they would find success. Many former students stayed in touch; some even became lifelong friends and were there to support her through her last days in the hospital.
Mary is survived by her brother Coy and his wife, Teresa, of Lutherville, Maryland, their three children, friends and loving students. Memorial details will be published at a later date.
