Mary Sue was born September 10, 1927 in Amarillo, Texas. She was the second daughter of Ephraim Daggett Hill and Kate Irene Hill. She and her 3 sisters Helen Jean, Beverly Joy, and Patricia Ann had a comradery unusual for sisters. Raised during the Great Depression and WWII Era, they learned the value of family, hard work, and doing what’s right in spite of the circumstances.
Mary Sue was the wife of one man, W.Z. Leatherwood Jr. until his passing in 2004. They were married 56 years and had 5 children, Walter Zedric (Rick), Stephen Miles, Edward Kirk, Sue Ann, and Robert Scott.
Texas was her home. She and Dub lived in Fort Worth, Lubbock, Waco, Beaumont, Houston, Missouri City, and finally Katy. Every city they lived they were active members of a church body. Her last body of believers was as a member of Kingsland Baptist Church, where she was active in the Christian Fellowship Class, Game Day dominos, and Kings Quilters.
She was an active part of several organization and clubs.
• Fonn Villas Swim Club social director
• Quail Valley Bridge Club and Sweetwater Bridge Club
• ARC- As a “grass roots” advocacy organization, The Arc’s mission is to ensure opportunities for people with intellectual and related developmental disabilities to maximize their quality of life within our community. Along with this advocacy, they provide recreational and social programs, employment assistance, housing support and the largest Special Olympics program in the area.
• Second Mile- Second Mile Mission Center helps Fort Bend County residents in poverty and crisis by providing basic needs and opportunities to take next steps in their lives. While people are drawn to Second Mile for immediate needs such as food or health care, many begin to shift their focus to long-term goals of self-sufficiency for themselves and their family.
• Kings Quilters- King's Quilters is part of the women's ministry at Kingsland. It's not strictly a First Generation function (women of ALL ages and stages are welcome), but there are quite a few participants in First Generation, which is why we're announcing in the Newsletter. They make baby quilts for the Pregnancy Help Center in Katy and send quilts overseas to Cambodia, Uganda, Guatemala, and other places when a mission group is traveling there.
• She was a world traveler visiting every continent with the exception of Antarctica.
• She went on mission trips to Guatemala and Tanzania along side her sister, Beverly Hoover.
She left this present world on August 15, 2021 and moved to her heavenly mansion and with no more suffering or pain. We rejoice and rest in knowing that we will be reunited one day.
Pall Bearers include Jonathan Leatherwood, Jacob Leatherwood, Taylor Leatherwood, Caleb Gore, Bill Davis, and Tom Gore
