Mary Margaret Wier Kelsey “Mickey” was born in Houston, Texas on the 13th of June 1922, to Elinor and Thomas P. Wier. Mickey attended The Kinkaid School and Lamar High School where she was a member of the second graduating class in 1939. She then attended the University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta.
In 1944, Mickey met John Roger Kelsey, Jr. in Houston while he was attending Baylor School of Medicine. They were married the following year and moved to Baltimore, St. Louis and later to Rochester, Minnesota where John was in residency at the Mayo Clinic. In 1953, after a brief stay in Paris, Texas, they moved to Houston for John to join his brother in private medical practice. They enjoyed all the different experiences and life-long friends they made in each place they lived.
Mickey was predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, Dr. John, as he was affectionately known. Mickey loved her family, Virginia Wier Kelsey, Robert Wier Kelsey and wife Heidi, Ann Kelsey Naber and husband Gary, all of Houston, John Roger Kelsey III and wife Tina of Dripping Springs, her grandchildren, Lindsay Naber Foxx and husband Jason, Lauren Kelsey Slubar and husband Chris, Benson Wilder Kelsey and spouse Todd Ferguson, Robert Gage Kelsey, Roger Reed Kelsey, and Davis and Smith Ketterer who have been welcomed into our family and her great grandchildren Lucille and Desmond Slubar. All of her grand and great grandchildren brought so much happiness to her life.
Mickey’s first priorities were always her children and Dr. John’s passions. She enjoyed serving on the boards of Sheltering Arms and Girl Scouts of America as well as her time on a Houston Grand Jury. She was a devoted volunteer at the Junior League well into her 80’s. Mickey enjoyed the many friends she made in her Investment Club, Late Bloomers Garden Club, at the Mah-Jongg table and on the golf course. She was a long time member of the Methodist Church and the Houston Country Club, where her father was a charter member for 60 years. Mickey’s avid curiosity led them to travel frequently after Dr. John’s retirement. Her fondest memories were of barge trips in France, walking the hills of Lower Slaughter in the Cotswolds, and fly fishing at their house at the Old Baldy Club in Wyoming.
Our family wishes to thank Cynthia Bruns for all the loving care and sweet friendship she had with Mickey.
The family will gather for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery followed by a family memorial service. In lieu of sending flowers, Mickey would ask that those who wish to remember her send a donation to a charity of their choice, The Kelsey Research Foundation or by an act of kindness for someone somewhere down the road. This would mean more to her than anything
