Mary Anna Sanchez Garcia went to be with our Lord, Jesus Christ, on May 15, 2016 at the age of 76. Mary Anna was born to Luis and Irene Sanchez on September 16, 1939 in Houston, Texas. One of seven children, Mary Anna grew up in South Houston and graduated from Milby High School in 1958. She met her husband, Alexander while a nursing student at Medical Arts Hospital. Mary Anna and Alexander were married on November 27, 1960. They had three sons, Alexander Garcia, Jr. (February 18, 1961), Alexander III (September 17, 1966) and Michael Joseph (June 3, 1970). Mary Anna always loved a challenge. She started her career at AT&T/Southwestern Bell as a telephone operator. During her tenure at AT&T/SWB, Mary Anna broke through many glass ceilings including becoming one of the first female Communication Technicians, along with her sister Gloria. Mary Anna retired from AT&T/SWB in 2001 after 38 years of service. Mary Anna was a faithful and active parishioner of St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church serving as an officer in Catholic Daughters of the Americas and a member of Asociación Guadalupanas. A South-Belt Area resident since 1977, Mary Anna is remembered as a very generous and genuine person who lived her faith in God every day. She was an incredibly loving and supportive wife and mother and a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. Mary Anna is survived by sons Alexander Garcia III (Malinda) and Michael Joseph Garcia (Elizabeth); grandchildren Michael Escagne (Cne’), Chase Johnson, Brianna Vega (Juan), Chad Johnson, Ryan Garcia, and Taylor Davis; great-grandchildren Mitchel, Mason, and Molly Escagne; and, siblings Gloria Casey, Phillip Sanchez, Clara Rodriguez, and Joe Sanchez. She is preceded in death by husband, Alexander Y. Garcia, Sr.; son, Alexander Garcia, Jr; parents Luis and Irene Sanchez; and, brothers Louis and Frank Sanchez.
Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM followed by a Vigil and Rosary at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale St, Houston, TX. There will be a Mass at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, 11011 Hall Rd, Houston, TX at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 19, 2016 followed by the funeral procession to Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery for interment. Immediately following the burial, there will be a Celebration of Life at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church social hall.
