Mrs. Mary Mitchell Cobb was born to the late Balim and Irene Brown Mitchell on May 25, 1939 in Minden, Louisiana. She is the last survivor of the Balim and Irene “dynasty.” Mary was affectionately called Tulu by her family. She will always be remembered as the family matriarch.
Mary accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church. She remained active in church affiliations in Chicago, Illinois where she resided for approximately forty years. After moving to Houston in 2007, she united with The Church Without Walls. She truly loved her church and attended faithfully until her health began to fail her.
Mrs. Cobb was educated in the Webster Parish schools of Minden, La. She is a 1958 graduate of Webster High School. After graduating high school, she attended Wiley College in Marshall, Texas where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 964.
After finishing college, Mary moved to Chicago, Illinois. She was gainfully employed as an elementary school teacher with the Chicago school system for thirty-four years.
In 1965 , she married her knight in shining armour, the love of her life, Robert Cobb, Sr. This beautiful and unique couple was married for fifty-five years. They were high school sweethearts, dating from October 15, 1954 to August 14, 1965.
Mary was a very stylish, talented, caring, and giving person. Her entrepreneurial endeavors came to fruition when she opened her business, Beauty Circle on 87th and Bennett St. in Chicago in the early 1970’s. Her shop included a hair salon, spa, and boutique. Eventually, she opened a nail salon, becoming the first Black acrylic nail specialist in Chicago.
This diva of a woman went on to expand her shop into sponsoring citywide style shows for which she was highly acclaimed. Her own personal walkway presentations were featured and talked about throughout the metroplex area. She loved music, especially jazz.
Mrs. Cobb is preceded in death by her parents, Balim and Irene Mitchell ( Kinsey ), her siblings, Elroy,
Roosevelt, Henry, Balim, Sr., and R.C. Mitchell, Ernestine Heard, Christine Broussard, and Dora Johnson.
Forever cherishing her precious memories are her husband, Robert Cobb, Sr. Houston, Tx.) son, Robert Cobb II (Toni), HOUSTON, Tx., daughter, Sonsaerray Gowder ( Mobile, Ala.), two grandsons, Tarrack Cobb ( Plano, Tx.), and Jerome Madison (Houston, Tx.), sister-in-law, Zona Winston (Minden, La. ), god -daughter, Kwyn Townsend Riley (Chicago, Ill), a host of nieces ,nephews, family, and friends from near and far.
