Mary Beth Wells Haygood was born on the 19th of October 1926, to Joe Blades and Martha Elizabeth Wells. She died on Saturday, the 12th of August 2017, after serving more than sixty five years in the United Methodist Church Ministry with her clergy husband.
She was a graduate of Dayton High School, Dayton, TX where she was a cheerleader, football sweetheart, senior class favorite and was awarded the Best All Around Girl at commencement. She was awarded the Associate of Arts degree from Lon Morris College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics at Sam Houston State University. She and Hooper were given Distinguished Alumni Awards from Lon Morris College in 1977. Among Houston area Methodist Churches she and her husband served were Crosby, Baytown (St. John's), and three Houston Churches (St. Andrew's, West University, and Westbury). Other Methodist Churches throughout East Texas include Beaumont (First Methodist), Tyler (St. Paul's), Groveton, Hawkins, Canton and Huntsville (Wesley Memorial). They also served two districts, one in Houston area and the other in the Nacogdoches area.
She loved music, and especially singing in the church choirs. She enjoyed many happy times with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and their families.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. W. Hooper Haygood and children: Sherra Babcock and her husband, Jim, of Chautauqua, New York; Glenda Dennison and her husband, Charlie, of Georgetown, TX; Reverend William H. Haygood, Jr. and his wife, Lesly, of Cypress, TX; 14 grandchildren: Elizabeth Malone and her husband, Scott, Stephanie Folds, Amanda Sweda and her husband, Joel, Courtney Babcock, Chuck Dennison and his wife, Stephanie, Cody Dennison, Danielle Harnett and her husband, Zach, Jenni Woodward and her husband, Scott, Christi Eggstaff and her husband, Justin, Geoffrey Turner, Preston Haygood, Hunter Haygood, Caleb Haygood, and Samuel Haygood; sister-in-law, Vera Wells of Conroe; 21 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Joe B. Wells, brother, James Wells, her sister and brother-in-law, Martha Jo and Authur Hoffman, brother and sister-in-laws Sidney C and Shirley Haygood, and sister and brother-in-laws, Dorothy and Emmett Dubberly.
A memorial service is to be conducted at half-past one o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 17th of August, in the Sanctuary of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston, where Dr. Linda Christians, Executive Pastor, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the nearby Hines-Baker Room.
Prior to the memorial service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.
