He served in the Army Air Corps from November 1942 through December 1945 as a pilot acquiring some 1600 hours and a commercial pilot’s license. He was a C-47 instructor; he also flew a large variety of aircrafts including P-51 and AT-6’s in the reserve.
He earned two degrees from Southern Methodist University, journalism (1948) and law (1950), he was editor of the school newspaper and law review. Marvin is a member of the State Bar of Texas and worked in the legal department for Texaco from 1950 to 1955 and in charge of Atlantic Richfield Company’s legal department from 1955 to 1985 and has fond memories of friends and experiences with many companies in the “oil patch” on and off shore.
Marvin was an editor of Cross and Cockade Journal and has been an Issue Editor of Over the Front since its inception. He is author of Callahan, The Last War Bird and Memoirs of a World War II Pilot. He also edited War Flying in France by George A. Vaughn, Jr., and items by William P. Taylor and Sopwith Camel Fighter Ace by Robert M. (Bob) Todd. He and George H. Williams co-authored Henry R. Clay, Sopwith Camel Ace.
He married Nelda Ueckert of Rosenberg, Texas in 1956. They have two daughters, Sharon Lynn and Sandra Kay, both graduates of the University of Houston. Both daughters live in El Paso. Sharon and her husband David Kessinger gave Marvin three beautiful granddaughters, Kaitlin, Christina and Victoria.
In 1985 he married Frances Thorpe Anderson of Houston, originally from Bryan, Texas. She had a large family with whom Marvin had harmonious relations. Frances died in 2000 after a courageous five year battle with scleroderma, an incurable, cruel and debilitating disease.
In due course Marvin met Bobbie J. (B.J.) Want, a lifelong Houston resident. She also has a large family whom Marvin had harmonious relations. Marvin and B.J. shared a busy, productive and loving journey.
A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77079, with the family receiving guests at 9:00 a.m.
