Marvella McElroy came into the world Marvella Bessie Mayes in Houston, TX on July 12, 1948, shortly after her twin brother Marvin Mayes. She was the fourth of six children born to loving parents, Ernest and Ruby Lee Mayes. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, Marvella studied for three years at Texas Southern University. She was married 27 years (divorced at her passing) and raised three beautiful daughters, while earning her Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Development from Lone Star College. Marvella went on to influence generations of future leaders as an educator before her retirement. Marvella loved the Lord, her family and her many friends. She continued to be a faithful member of the Champion Community Baptist Church and Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. until the time of her passing. Marvella went home peacefully on January 26, 2017 after a courageous battle with stomach cancer. She was preceded in death by her sister, Linda Ruth Mayes, her parents, Ernest Rubin Mayes and Ruby Lee Cook-Mayes, and her daughter, Felicia Monique McElroy-Jackson. She leaves to cherish her memories her devoted siblings: Ruby L. Mayes “Nena”, Ernestine Singleton, Rev. Marvin Mayes (Lucille), Rev. Richard Mayes (Jackie); her children: Estelline Joycette Mayes and Mya Denise McElroy; and her grandchildren: Antonio, Kevin, Zacchaeus, Cody, Camille, Cameron, India, Ja’li, and Ethan as well as her beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
