Marty was born September 29, 1966 in Wichita, Kansas to M. Lane and Billie J. Kerns. Marty was a long time resident of Houston, Texas and graduated from Memorial High School in 1985. He went on to graduate with a Business Degree in Finance from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas and then a law degree from South Texas School of Law in Houston, Texas. Marty started his career as an attorney and then Partner with Beirne, Maynard, Parsons in Houston, Texas. After retiring from law in 2007, he went on to join his dad in the Investment Business as CEO and then President of Kerns Capital Management, Inc. and M. L. Kerns & Associates, Inc. In addition to managing client wealth, Marty served as a Portfolio Manager to a ’40 Act mutual fund (2007-2021) that won back-to-back Lipper Fund Awards in 2018 and 2019 for best fund in its class over five years. In 2021, Marty joined Icon Wealth Partners as a Managing Director alongside his sister Michelle. Marty has served on the Guggenheim Rydex Advisory Board and the National Association of Active Investment Managers Board.
Marty was preceded in death by his father, M. Lane Kerns. He is survived by his mother, Billie J Kerns of Sugarland, Texas; his children, Hayden Michael Kerns (wife Alexis) and Riley Claire Kerns of Houston Texas; loving sister Michelle LaDoucieur (husband David) and their two children Caroline and Ashley LaDoucieur of Sugarland, Texas.
Outside of business Marty was a loving father to his two kids whom he loved more than anything. Everything he did was for them. Marty was a lifelong friend to many. His closest friends were those that he met while a young teen at Memorial Junior High School. He became extremely close to his sister in the last years of his life. Marty enjoyed life and all it had to offer. He enjoyed sports – any kind at any time! In his younger years, he enjoyed Motorcross and traveled all over Kansas and Texas racing with his dad. He played basketball, baseball and football at Memorial Jr. and Sr. High Schools. Marty served as the commissioner and coach for both Hayden and Riley’s teams in the Spring Branch Memorial Sports Association. His favorite days were traveling with his son to tournaments and cheering louder than anyone else in the stands for both kids’ sports. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, his annual ski trips with his daughter, Riley (when time and schedules permitted), as well as good food, friends and off-color jokes.
The Kerns/LaDoucieur Families would like to thank all of those that have reached out with offers of help and support, with special thanks to Brooke Hamilton and Icon Wealth Partners. We are all so very blessed to have you in our lives.
Gone but never forgotten. “Glad you got to see me”
