Martin attended Katy High School, where he developed a passion for athletics—most notably football, in which he earned All-District and All-State honors as an “Iron Man” end. He continued his education at Wharton Jr. College before attending Sam Houston State University, preparing himself for a lifelong career marked by dedication and service.
In 1968, Martin married Frances Bankston, and together they were blessed with two sons, Christopher and Kyle. That same year, Martin began working at Exxon’s Katy Gas plant as an instrument technician. In 1982, he transitioned to work as an erosion technician, and later in his career moved to the Greenspoint Office, where he worked in the role of regulatory and risk management—a position he served with integrity and skill until his retirement.
In 1985, Martin married his second wife, Ellen James, and together they built a life rooted in faith, family, and hard work. They continued their careers side by side until retiring in 2006, enjoying the fruits of their labor.
Martin was a faithful and active member of Memorial Lutheran Church, where he served many years as an elder. His devotion to his church community was matched by his love for sports and the outdoors—particularly fishing, which brought him great joy.
Martin is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Alice, and his stepmother, Juanita, as well as his nephew Todd Matthews; his brothers-in-law Jim Matthews and John Mechaley; and his stepbrother Joe Chester.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Ellen; his sons, Chris and Kyle, and their spouses, Lisa and Kerrie; Stacey Schaefer, who was like a daughter to him. He is also survived by his brothers, Floyd, Bill, and Jim, and their spouses, Elaine, Cindy, and Kay; his sisters, Sondra, Janet, and Joyce, along with Joyce’s husband, Butch. Martin’s memory lives on in his beloved grandchildren—Holden, Noah, Hunter, and Gage—as well as a wide and loving circle of extended family, including many cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to all who shared in Martin ’s life - those friends who worked alongside him at the Katy gas plant and at Exxon, all those that shared his love for sports and fishing, and his devoted church family at Memorial Lutheran Church. Your love, friendship, and prayers have meant so much to him and those that loved him.
Martin will be remembered for his strength, faith, humility, and the quiet but unwavering way he cared for those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and faith that will live on in all who knew him especially his beloved wife Ellen and his favorite son, Kyle and his other favorite son, Chris.
