Marjorie Ann Hendon was born on August 21, 1931, as a twin to Pearl Woods Hendon and Napoleon Hendon in Bellaire, Texas. Unfortunately, her twin did not survive, and her father died before she was born. She attended Harper School on Center Street in Sixth Ward. Marjorie (aka as Margie and NaNa) attended Harper School in Sixth Ward when at the time black children all went to the same school regardless of age or grade. She later met OH Cavanaugh and after a few months of dating, they married on September 17, 1955. To this union, she gave birth to three boys (all stillbirth) and a healthy baby girl, Andria Bernice Cavanaugh.
Marjorie accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Greater Mt. Pillow Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. C.D. Dixon located in the deep West End on Feagan Street. For many years she served as an usher on the usher board and also helped in the church kitchen selling dinners to help raise money for the church improvements. After the death of Rev. Dixon, she served under the leadership under Rev. Clovis Johnson and Bishop James Dixon at the same church. She later joined McGee Chapel and was a faithful member until her health began to fail. She made many friends with the church members and spoke regularly by phone with the First Lady, Sister Berry and Deborah Frierson, and several times a day to Hanna Evans. She also talked to her good friend on a daily basis to Barbara Pierson.
In her younger days, she worked as a Cook at Sam’s Café and later took a correspondence class to become a cashier which at that time it was mandatory. She utilized her trade and joined Harper Elementary School as the Cafeteria Cashier. She worked close with her cafeteria trio at Harper with whom she worked with for many years (Minnie, Verna, and Forestine - all preceded her in death) where they spent time together on and off the clock. She continued to talk with another ex-coworker from Harper until her health failed, Olivia Spiller. Margie started a part-time job with at the time was Gulf Gas Station (now Chevron) and was promoted to Assistant Manager, then to Station Manager. After a many of years of service, she retired from Chevron in 1995.
After retiring, she enjoyed cooking and caring for her grand and great grandkids. Saturday mornings were a treat for the grands because she faithfully cooked their favorite breakfast - pancakes, eggs and bacon! NaNa was a great cook! She passed her cooking skills down to her daughter which she verbally said on many occasions she would cook until she couldn’t and when she said no more cooking, she did no more cooking. NaNa loved and adored her son-in-law, Ray. She treated and loved him like a son instead of a son-in-law which she referred to as ‘my child’. She had her own relationship with her family members. She would play fight with Bubbas and Nick did no wrong! Anyone who talked with her know Prince! He was her little hero who brought her many days of laughter! She loved her some Prince! When her health really began to really decline, she still enjoyed her life with her daily/weekly routine TV shows. She was an avid fan of watching wrestling, Family Feud, Young and the Restless and her Find-a-Word puzzles. On Friday, May 5th, the Lord called her home. No more suffering, no more pain. She will truly, truly be missed.
Marjorie is survived by her only child, Andria Cavanaugh Travis (Ray), significant daughter - Demetria DeGrate (Calvin), Granddaughter, JhaKeesha Robbins (Shannon), Grandsons - BJ (Bubbas) Jackson, Jr., and Nickolas Travis (Vanessa). Three great grandchildren, Noah, Shannon Jr, and Isaiah. NaNa also grand mothered five other grandchildren, Anecia (aka Candy), Jonathan (Shamika), Ernest (aka JR) Jr., Janetta (aka Kissy) and Marion (Jasmine). She also leaves Godson - Kristopher Mathis, Sr., and Goddaughter - Lisa Nsuk.
She was preceded in death by husband OH Cavanaugh (35 years of marriage before his untimely demise), Pearl Hendon (mother), Napoleon Hendon (father), Wesley Wilson (grandfather), Eli Gary (stepfather) and Addie Cavanaugh (mother-in-law).
