Marie grew up in Beaumont, Texas, where she graduated from Beaumont High School. In August of 1977, Marie married Stuart Clark, now deceased, who was the love of her life and perfect companion on the road to living life to the fullest.
Family, friends, her church, and her political beliefs were Marie’s passion and delight. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, would always bring happy times and lots of love. She and Stuart were long-time members of the First United Methodist Church of Houston and the Adelphi Sunday school class where she worked tirelessly to help chronicle the many years of service. Together, they participated in mission trips to South America, Mexico, and Costa Rica. They traveled to all parts of the world with the Adelphi Bridge Travel Group. Her desire to help others was evident as she reached out to help those in need. Typical of which, friends recall the time Marie helped a friend with cancer by having all of his suits altered when his clothing no longer fit. With a smile always on her face, Marie could be counted on to be there for others. She seemed to know what was important to each one of us, a natural intuition for knowing what to do. Marie was a consummate hostess who made everyone feel that they were the only one in the room. She was a shining example to all who knew her. Marie was strong in character and faithful to her Lord, who was her strength.
Politically, Marie was a loyal Republican having been an active member of the Magic Circle Republican Women’s Club and one of the founders of American Women Supporting the President. She and Stuart made a trip to the White House, in 1985, to attend Ronald Reagan’s Inaugural festivities, a most memorable trip. Over the years, they received acknowledgements of their contributions and support for a philosophy they strongly believed in.
Marie is preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Stuart Clark; her daughter, Lynne Colbert; and 10 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son, Craig Clark and wife, Marlene, of Austin; grandchildren, Christa Marie Clark and Caitlyn Rose Clark of Austin; Mark Colbert and Wendy Wesley of Chicago, Illinois; David Colbert and wife, Katye of Kingwood; Becca Colbert Hine and husband Andrew, of St. Paul, Minnesota; Amanda Willson and her husband, Brandon, of Houston; great -grandchildren Paige and Sophie Colbert of Kingwood, and Phillip Colbert of Nevada City, California; step-children, Lee H. Clark and wife, Patricia of Bentonville, Arkansas; step-daughter, Rebecca L. Clark of Houston; their children and grandchildren and extended family members, all of whom will cherish and honor her memory, most especially, Judy Canon, her “adopted” daughter and dear friend.
The family would like to acknowledge the dedication and loving care provided by Aida Elizalde for 35 years. Lurline Shaw, Viola Bailey, and Gabriel Oladimeji were faithful in their loving care of both Marie and Stuart. The family would also like to thank friends and loved ones, who have been such a special part of Marie’s life.
A memorial service is to be conducted at six o’clock in the evening on Monday, the 17th of June, in the sanctuary of First Methodist Church, 1320 Main Street in Houston, where the Rev. Charles Thompson, Executive Pastor, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the nearby Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to the Adelphi Sunday School Class at First Methodist Church, 1320 Main Street, Houston, TX, 77002. The class does so much to help the lives of others.
